So I've heard some sound clips of the various pipes, but does anyone have first hand experience with the special ops pipe? How does it work with the stock tune? How do you think it sounded? I want it to sound as close to a Harley as possible. I would want the d&d if I were buying a new pipe. I'm looking at a used 9s with the spec ops already on it though. Any comments? Thanks.

You'll like it.
Great sounding pipe.
Too loud for my old ears, but a damn fine pipe, good power as well.

The Special Ops pipe is great.
No drop in mid range, bike runs fantastic.
Put it on with stock ECM. Sounds great, not like a Harley but I would say like a Buell stock pipe with the valve open all the time and a little louder.
Buell madness!!!

I have an 07 xb9r that I tried a Spec ops pipe on. I ended up going back to stock for the following reasons:
1- It was quite loud, louder than I wanted. It also had a resonance at light throttle that I found obnoxious. Then there was the decel backfiring...every time I let off the throttle it let out a string of backfires.
2- At low rpm(1500-3000)it was very strong, and at high rpm(5000-rev limiter)it ran great, but, the mid-range was dead. Especially in the 4000-5000 rpm range where it just fell on its face.
3- Gas mileage dropped from over 50 mpg to 40-45 mpg.

The combination of these three things made me go back to stock. I think the Spec ops works better on the 12 than the 9, or maybe it is something in the map for the 07. Whatever the cause, most people seem to like this pipe, but it did not work for me. It all depends on what you are looking for.

Well, for now, I want it loud. I've always wanted a Buell, the only bike I had before was a zx-6r. I was going to get a supermoto, but I decided I need something a little practical(I need to be able to get on the highway a lot). Anyway, I fell in love with this '96 s1. The seller had video clip of it idling, maaaaannnnnn. It sounded like a top fueler, lol. The nada on it was only $2500 so that deal never happened. So I've decided now to get an xb so that I can get a proper loan for it. I've only heard sound clips of any of the exhausts, nothing in person. I'm afraid of the stock exhaust when buying because it sounds so puny in the clips. How bad does it sound in person?

Sort of like a lawn tractor at idle. It sounds pretty good at higher rpm, just really quiet.

I am not sure about the 9's but I have it on my 12. Everyone that hears it loves it. It is not as deep and thuddy as a Drummer pipe, but it is plenty loud (not obnoxiously loud IMO). I have it with my stock EMC. I do get backfire on decel when the motor is cold. When it warms up, only occasionally. As far as mileage goes, I went from 45-50 to 50-55mpg but I am not sure if that is because of the pipe or everything had settled in on the bike. As far as price goes, you can't beat it and Odie is top notch. As far as power in the rpm's it does me fine in the twisties. I am not an expert enough to distinguish loss or gain of power from the stock to the Spec Ops though.
FYI, I am also running an '07 airbox & K&N filter.

my 2 cents

I have a Spec OPS on my '07 XB12 and I love it.

The stock pipe worked fine, but they sound like lawn tractors to me. I put the Spec OPS on with the stock ECM and everything worked out good - ran just like it did with the stock pipe. I've been able to average 66mpg with this setup on a longer trip (no interstate).

A few months ago I did an open airbox conversion and remapped the ECM. The thing is an animal now, mid-range has a lot more hit, and mileage only dropped to the mid-high 50's.

From all accounts I could see, the Spec OPS was the 2nd best all-around pipe you can get for the 12, bested only slightly by the Micron system, which costs $600 more.

The sound is nice. It's very harley-esque, but not the same as a Sportster with SEII's or anything. It sounds racier.

I've been running the Spec ops on a 05 xb12scg for around 8 months. Stock ECU, Stock intake.

Sound is excellent and I get regular comments, my favorite being "I think I just wet myself"

My mileage went from 48 to 57MPG.

Mine also exhibits a touch of decel pop, though I've read that most all pipes do this, you just dont hear it as much on quieter pipes.

Odie is a great guy to work with, and the box that mine shipped in was well traveled and is probably still floating around the country with more and more tape on it. (Not that the box is a selling point)

Good luck with your piping Buell adventure.

I really like the spec ops on my 9. You really need a Race ECM or custom fuel map on the 9, the Stock ECM is not a good match.

My experience is a bit different.

1. Loud yes and I like the sound. The backfiring is present with the stock pipe too, however it is quiet enough that you may not notice it.
2. The dip around 4,100-4,400 can be seen on a dyno chart. It can be minimized by opening up your airbox, or eliminated with a custom fuel map.
3. My mileage actually improved when I added the Race ECM and Spec Ops, from 48-50 to 52-54.

I think I'm going to for the 9s that has the spec ops pipe. It has 16k on it and probably needs two new tires and a belt, but at $3700 with jacket and helmet, I can do that. There are two really nice bikes from the same owner, a 9s and a 9r, but they're both stock. If I add the price of the tires and belt, they'd be about the same price with a few less miles but without a helmet or jacket. Then I'm starting with a stock bike though. The only other mods the first bike has is the pipe and the blinkers are done.

For the record...

I was out on the bike two days ago, and while I was at a stop light this hardcore bad-ass lookin' mo-fo on this beat up old Harley rolls up next to me with a huge grin on his face and says, "Man, that thing sounds SICK!"

You'll like it, I promise.

Now that I have my new pipe (Cant post the name here)on it, I get lots of stares from the Harley guys. Mileage is better, high 50's, throttle response has improved and strong from the bottom up, all with a stock ECM, (Going to a Race ECM Soon) This is on a 12, not sure if the results would be the same power wise but the sound would be, and yes it does almost sound like a top fueler.
