It's really not that difficult to make. You can get the USB to TTL cable from Mouser, and the correct duetsch connector from Hals HD(one of our fine sponsors).

I just got my USB to TTL cable this week. I'll be making the cable this weekend. I'll post pics and part #s.

The only thing that worries me about ECM spy, is people advertising wanting maps for the Race ECM to flash their stock ECM. IMHO, that's SERIOUSLY DISHONEST. And a good way to get the HD lawyer's undies in a bunch if they ever catch wind of it.

Sort of like M$ telling you it's ok to buy an Xbox and games as well. Just don't open it up or God help you. Mod it and you going to hell. If you buy a new Ford w/ a V-6 and you decide to swap it out w/ a V-8 what can Ford do about it? Nada.. I say if you buy a stock ECM and your friend buys a race ECM you both own them. If you want to paint it pink w/ stripes or pull the ECM code and GIVE it to your buddy it's nun of HD's business. Selling it would be a crime. Comments?

About the transfer of race map to non race ecm; just how much "map" is transfered?

Would it include timing maps and algorithms?

Making money on factory maps is bad.

Sharing the knowledge is good.

On the same subject, sharing a custom map built by a board sponser is bad. They worked really hard to get their maps just right, and are willing to sell them for a fair price.

Take it how you will... But sharing the race ecm map is nothing short of piracy/stealing.

I know I'd be seriously p-offed is someone took my work and didn't pay for it.

It sounds like you're dealing with intellectual property.

Put it this way -- say you invested hundreds of thousands of dollars and created a map that made 150 hp and you copyright it - expecting to re-coup your costs and fund more exciting software for different bikes.

But here comes someone who bought it and says, "now it's mine and I will share it with everyone for free so they can modify it further".

Now no one buys your software cause its free, you're poor, the taxman puts a lien on your house, you now need to sell your kids for scientific research to pay the bills and no one has the incentive to want to make new and exciting software like you just did...

And that's why we have intellectual property laws (oh how I love Capitalism!!!)

But remember, it's ONLY ILLEGAL IF YOU GET CAUGHT!!! (at least in the US...)

How long before we start seeing the posts about burnt up motors?

I take it that the person who started this thread either deleted it or Glitch helped him out.

I agree that if your gonna sell your widget here send blake some $$$$$$$$

Sharing Purchased maps is bad mojo. I hope those who do get what they deserve.

I would like to see Badweb policy reflect this.

WOW!
This thread went from someone selling cables, to a debate about using sponsors, making cables, to an ethical debate on intellectual property to someone asking about making cables again!

Someone who will not listen to advice will learn the hard way. If they and burn up their motor by messing with their ECM without data or knowing what they are doing, then so be it. Lesson learned. Hopefully they will use Badweb sponsors to replace their broken parts. I will use my ECMSPY with a cable that I soldered a connector on for diagnostics and tps resets with the full knowledge that I can change my fuel maps at my own risk.

Just because I have the ability to copy a fuel map doesn’t mean I will.

I simply would not put my $10,000.00 machine on the line for $40.00 worth of plastic and wire. I understand it,s simple electronic information recovery as a forklift mechanic I have seen soooooo many stupid things go wrong I just can not and will not chance it.I got $200.00 to spend on an ECM and even if I didn't I would wait until I did.

The EcmSpy is a tool for us to learn a bit more about our ecm's. It only needs to be used as far as an individual owner is happy with. There is no way I would like to put someone else's individually tuned eeprom into my bike, whether it be done by a sponsor or a professional or whatever, because it may not work very well on my bike. I have (well, had) 2 XB12's one with a GB231 the other an IB310 and the same fuel map will not work properly on both bikes, despite both being set up the same, so each bike got tuned individually. I don't think the idea behind EcmSpy was ever to swap eeproms, but more about tuning your own individual bike for yourself, that is, if you want to. On top of that it is educational in the ability to monitor and rest AFV, reset TPS, and reveal a lot of the tables inside the ecm, something XB owners were all screaming for just 2 short years ago...

Yea, bad things (can) and WILL happen.

Then the owner will likely come here or some other INTERNET "vent room", to whine and bellyache about how Buell won't cover the failure under warranty.

Court:
Does it have something to do with our Federal Government and their regulations? Plus fines in the $10k-$100k range? Besides companies spend 1000's of $'s to get their "system" to meet or exceed the federal regulations. Carb equipted engines could more readily be modified, even with plugs over their mixture screws.

They just want the American public to be able to breathe.

The rivets in the timing cover and the difficult to access Maps and control measures that may be required by out guberment. EPA baby. Just like tamper resistant fasteners that came on our cars and trucks for years.

Ok look I figure it this way maybe I am wrong but here it is my xb12ss is rated @ 103 realisticly maybe 89 hp it weighs 405 lbs dry the hp to wieght ratio is still supurb.I am a svelt 280lbs and I am no Rossi but I can handle the machine I have outridin more than I have not. I see alot of guys on the tunner kick but half of them are wantabee rossi's who shouldn't be tunning their machines in the first place. I am not saying everyone shouldn't touch the ecm's I am saying there are alot who would (A.) get no benifit and (B.) probably screw up the machine in the process and that I AM BOTH A&B!!!!!! so I opt to not touch it and I am sure we all know some one who shouldn't either but will.

I don't think the EMCspy would have even been developed if the Stock or Race ECM could adjust to modifications to the engine/exhaust/intake etc.
If I add an aftermarket exhaust, an open air box, I need something to compensate, if the Buell ECM did this, no one would have tried to crack it.
Direct Link is too expensive for many.

I see it as a more user friendly (than the Kimball DOS based software) way to do things
like reset TPS and AFV.

Terry G and the boys at Hal's spent a lot of time tuning my bike and I'm not about to mess
around with a professional's handi-work, but that doesn't mean I should be at the mercy of
the dealership for simple things like TPS resets.

Funny how a few months/years back people were moaning about the fact that with the XB they were tied to their dealers for TPS resets etc.
Now there is a cheap and relatively easy solution for us to do this kind of maintenance by ourselves, and yet there are complaints that this is dangerous or even illegal etc. (though I understand these do not come from the same people)

At the end of the day the ECM spy has been primarily developed for performing maintenance tasks, investigating/clearing fault codes and so on, so the enthusiast who enjoys working on his bike can also take care of everything ECM related. The developers then realised they could go further by accessing and altering the maps.
If one is not happy with this then fine, to each his own, but I don't see the point in jumping on a thread just to say how wrong it is to use ECM spy and how bad it is for the engine... Obviously a some people will start playing with maps without enough knowledge and mess everything up, obviously a few of them will come on here crying, but then noone is forced to help them if they feel they got what they deserve.

Don't get me wrong, I also think there are some things you shouldn't do regarding IP, but I believe most of the ECM spy users will just use it for maintenance, and in any case this was not the subject of the thread originally.

Cheers,

Olivier

That’s its I am outlawing all screw drivers and other hand tools cause if you turn the wrong screw it might mess stuff up, or void your warranty.

ECMSpy is simply that a new screwdriver to adjust stuff on a electronic carburetor.

If you don’t want to turn the screw then don't

But I do, and it’s my bike so I will (insert evil Laugh)
