Ok I'm in the market for an xb12. Went to the dealer and they had a few older 03-06 bikes. most with miles under 1000 because of demo rides and such. I found an xb with markings on the tripple tree that said xb9 and markings on the engine that said xb9. this was and old race bike I think and the dealer said it was an xb12 engine with a big boar kit. Milage said 42 but this thing looked more like 8k miles. it had a chain conversion, steering dampner exhaust and some other nick nacks. The dealer could not get me a parts list for the bike it seems like they know nothing about it and couldn't tell by looking. How can I tell an xb12 motor and an xb9 motor apart on a 03 bike? how can I tell this is a 12 motor in a 9 frame other than taking their word? They are wanting 7k out the door does this sound fishy?

A stock 9 has black engine cases and a stock 12 has magnesium cases.

9 & 12 use the same frame (for the XBS, XBR and XBSX anyway).

If it's an ex race bike I would personally steer clear of it unless I had it's whole back story.
But that's just me.
It's been my experience that the more hopped up something is, the more wrenching she'll require.
On of the many reasons why I love my Buell is that there is very little wrenching required. That leaves more time for riding.

I don't remember the color of the cases but I do remember seeing an xb9s emblem on the side.

you can also tell by the size of the header. 12 headers are bigger

If it is an 03 Buell it is the XB9 with the Bore kit as they did not make a 12 in 03

STEALERSHIP ALARM going off!!! Walk Away from the dealership and buy a bike locally or here on Badweb....That bike will sit on the floor unless some goof ball walks in there not knowing crap about them and gets cought up in the moment for a bike....SAD I SAY

Or spend a couple grand more and get a new one at there Full MSRP Price.

A 2003 Buell shouldn't cost more than 3500-4k TOPS!!!

the date on the tag said 03 so its probably considered an 04. I talked to 2 salesmen and the owner of the place and could not get any straight answers from them. Making me look the other direction at other bikes. I never did like harley dealerships and customer service. this is supposed to be a respective shop here in austin. guess they don't want my money

Your on the right path to walk away....Buy Private and not get screwed from the stealership....They are worthless....Buy the manual and do your own wrenching if it even needs any. These bikes are practicly bullet proof.

I'd be looking in the classifieds right here on this board, at least you know what you are getting and how any miles are on it.

F.Y.I.

My purchase price on my XB12s 2004 was 5k before taxes.

It also only had 5800 miles on it.

my purchase took place this year as well.

Like some of the others have said - they want too much money. IF it was BUILT by them and they had the list of goodies there for you and you could TALK to the tech who built it... $7K would not be out of the question but a race motor with an unknown amount of miles on it??? Naawww.

Do VIN on chassis and engine match? If so, it CANNOT be an XB12, there is no way that the factory will re-assign a VIN to a different type of engine than original. It MIGHT be a punched-out XB9 motor. That is a really good modification - gives you 1169cc but again, not knowing its history, you're on shakey ground as far as reliability.

You MIGHT be able to negotiate but if they're STARTING at $7K, it sounds like they're not trying too hard to sell the bike. See if they will let you seek out the person who did the engine work... you'll have TONS of questions:

WHAT Components for:

cylinders, pistons, crank, valves.

WHAT head work? (if any)

WHAT crank work (balancing, lightening, if done at all)

WHAT compression ratio?

Just as important: how much suspension work? (if they're going to stay racing, many racers keep their "good" suspension and put on a stock suspension to sell the bike)

These are just a few questions I can think of before the morning coffee takes effect.

I would shop around.
There are a lot of buys out there this time of year.
I just missed a really nice 03 XB9S that a guy was selling for $3500. It was about 500 miles away from me, and I couldn't make the trip until the day after someone else bought it.
I got a brand new 06 XB9SX at my local dealer for $6900 plus the $50 doc fee.
Any dealer that has 06's or older bikes on the floor should want to sell them at their cost to move them out. Mine was a bit under cost. (I had purchased two other Buells there over the years @ MSRP.)
I love the 06 ! They changed a few things on it compared to the 05 Ihad. -roadrash1

Is the bike at Central Texas Harley? I recall that it was the race bike of the GM's son. Buellerthanthou (HellBuellie J)may be able to answer questions about it. Get to the parts counter and ask for James Howze. Or you could ask about it in the sponsors section here http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/171 43/219724.html?1180459598
I seem to recall seeing that bike and questions about it in a thread somewhere here as well.
