I have an 03 xb9s and today I took off on it and the speedometer isnt working. It does the whole rotation thing when you turn the key on, but its not reading how fast I'm going. I was just wondering if anybodies got any ideas for me.

Thanks a million, Rich

I know a few people were having trouble with that... Something about the speed sensor. Search the KV, I'm sure there are more than a couple threads about it.

There were chronic speedo sensor failures on many Buells, but your bike model did NOT have the problem that was making them blow.

So while it does sound like a speedo sensor... your failure may be just bad luck, or a loose connection.

Pull it and see if its covered in metal spooge. Its a strong magnet. If so, try cleaning it.

The 03 XBs had trouble with the voltage fluctuations to the speed sensor. There is a retro-fit kit that includes a filter on
the power supply. I would try cleaning the pickup that goes into the tranny just above the output pulley first though to
see if that takes care of it.

Thats true on the XB-R bikes... but the XB-S bikes had regulated power to the speedo sensor from day one.

The EXACT same thing happened to me. I have an 03 XB9. I was told to take out the speedo sensor and clean it but that didnt work so I bought a new one and replaced it Thursday. It was simple to do and the part cost $62.00 or something. Works now.

If you have an XB9R you'll be good for a short time. I replaced mine twice before finding out that they have a Speed Sensor Re-wire kit. You have to call the dealer and tell them that you want the re-wire kit. Be prepared for them not to know what you're talking about, try to sell you the regular speed sensor, and then finally someone will call over the "Buell Guy" in the shop and they'll know what you're talking about. It's like going into a Honda Dealer and asking for a Ducati part. They look at you real funny like.

Slith- I believe they call it the "deer in headlights" look. It's a common phenomenon, usually encountered on freeways, highways, back roads, and Harley dealerships.

see if you can get one of the fine gentlemen on this forum to get you the part numbers you may need to take to them at the service department. I have issues witht he deer in the headlight look, if im spending my money at a store thay better at least look like they know what im talking about.
