Actually it was pavement at 30 mph. Slipped on some grrrravel. Slid off the road and into the grass. The left fork stuck in the ground and became a pivot point for a wild merry go-round ride until I hit the kill switch. Twisted the forks. Just for info a new front end on a TT is 2000 dollars in parts and 900 dollars in labor. | ||

shit man, i hope you came out alright! and sorry to hear the bikes pain. But even at $2900, its still better than spending that in the emergency room! the bike doesnt bleed! Although many of us, feel they are our children! | ||

Boy this is a good lesson in ALWAYS paying attention! All the times I've been scared badly on the highway have been when I let my attention wander and ALMOST got in trouble - so I really understand how it can happen! Glad REALLY GLAD you're doing OK. I was thinking you meant you got slapped by a branch that extended into the roadway. Bummer about the twisted front end. As pricey as that is, $2900 sounds about right. Interesting your point about the sunglasses... I have always been scared by the thought of wearing sunglasses under the helmet. I've destroyed 3 helmets now in racing and as a result, never wear sunglasses on the street (though really REALLY want a tinted face shield sometimes!!!) OOOUUCCHH, WOW Glad to hear your OK, short of your thumb. Really $2k for parts? When I messed up mine, the entire left side fork tube was only $365. Granted that was just one side, but times 2 and an upper and lower triple, wheel and tire, fender, flyscreen, handle bars, controls, cables etc. After typing all that, I guess $2k would be about right. | ||

With winter coming you may be able to hold off on repairs, watch the classifieds and ebay and get the parts cheaper. The labor installing the parts is really easy and with all parts on hand shouldn't take much more than an hour. Your insurance co and title lein holder probably wouldn't be happy with that plan though. Oh yeah, ATGATT rules because No One ever plans to crash, unless they work for a hollywood studio. In perspective helmets are cheaper to replace than a face! (less painful too!) Glad you had your helmet on and the chin bar locked down. (Message edited by diablobrian on October 06, 2007) | ||

hit by a suburban , sideswiped at 40 mph and i was sent over the bars sliding down the pavement. It trashed my helmet, jacket, gloves, draggin jeans, and put a hole in my leather boots. I was fine my bike had about 1500 in damage but i didnt even need to go to the hospital. Her insurance paid for all new gear and all the new parts plus labor, after i took her to court to establish blaim. | ||

Since we're trotting out the stories here is mine again. Had a girl turn left out of a blind parking structure and hit me and my wife head-on. We were traveling 45mph on a 4 lane (with center turn lane) In San Diego during the morning rush. She had 300 miles total driving experience (the odometer total on her brand new car). We know that she stomped the throttle to the floor because of the force of the impact. Both the bike (ended up in 3 chunks) and the car (kinked frame rail) were totaled by the impact. I acted as an airbag for my wife and crushed the steel gas tank with my pelvis. My wife then flew 40 feet (and over the car) before coming to rest. I "only" flew 30 ft. We both landed in our own previous lane of travel. At this point I am being held together by soft tissue and leather. My femoral artery was ruptured as well. If we hadn't been 2 blocks from a major trauma center that would have been the end for me. My wife fractured 4 vertebrae and sustained a bi-lateral hemorrhagic stroke. Sounds bad, but we LIVED which is more than what the cops on the scene expected. Grand total: My left leg is paralyzed due to my sciatic nerve being transected at my spine, poor circulation in that leg too. I carry around a bunch of metal in my hip (loads of fun at the airport) and I have some problems with my short term memory. My wife: has continued weakness in her right side, and had to re-teach herself how to read. But our kids (all 3 of them) still have both of their parents. The girl in the car received minor burns from her air bag. The good bit out of all of it is this: because My wife and I lost consciousness at the scene of the accident California law dictates that our drivers licenses were suspended until we could get out of the hospital, obtain documentation, and schedule a meeting to clear the suspension, and then WE had to re-take our written and driving exams. The girl at fault in the accident did not have to go through any of that. How crazy is that? Any way, I know for a fact wearing your gear can save your life. All this happened withing 3 miles of home, so don't think that just because the trip is short that you are safe and don't need to put on the gear. ATGATT 'nuf said. | ||

I just low sided mine this morning. Only damaged my frame slider, trashed my CRG mirror and scratched up the header. Cold tires and a sharp corner don't mix too well | ||

Most vehicular accidents happen within 25 miles of home, so I always trailer my bike that far away, and then get on and ride. Kind of a hassle but statistically I'll be much safer. KIDDING. Glad your still alive, and your children still have parents. Bikes are easily repaired or replaced, Human bodies,,,not so easy. It sometimes seems to be a hassle to "gear up" just for a quick ride, but then stories like this make you realize how vulnerable and fragile we really are. A.T.G.A.T.T. |
