I have American Sport Bike's billet oil dipstck. It is great! However, since the stick is brass it is kind of hard to see my oil level. My question is what would happen if I painted the stick flat black. Would the oil eat at the paint or would it actually stick and be OK. Of course I would clean the stick and rough up the stick before I painted it. What do you think about flat black as a color choice? Thanks!

As long as the surface is clean it WILL stick.
I've done this to two of my bikes and neither one had the paint come off.
I painted mine white it was easier for me to see. I think when your oil starts getting old it my be hard to see. Try a lighter color first.

I wonder if the high temp shrink tube that some have used on their plastic dipsticks would work on the metal one as well?

Metalstorm,

I think after time the oil will cause the shrink tube to soften and expand. I would much rather have a few paint flakes in my oil system than a piece of shrink tubing. However, I have way more faith in the paint staying the stick than the tubing staying on the stick. Just my .02.

Wantxbr,

I will try the lighter color first. Probally a good choice!

I did a fresh oil/filter change, made sure I had the correct level of oil and then drilled some small holes in the brass... Gives a good visual of where the "full" mark should be. As for the "Fill" line I A-B'ed it to the stock stick.
Just another angle...

BTW: I have the American Sport Bike Stick.

Awhile back there was a post about this subject and someone mentioned that they bought some yellow shrink tube at NAPA and it worked well on the factory dip stick

Did that to mine, works great. The guy I sold it to hasn't had any problems with "softening"

Stop by a local body shop and see if they will dip it into some activated urethane of some bright color whenever they are painting something.

I posted the original yellow shrink tube modification about four years ago.

I am still using the original dipstick.

Two Buells and 23, 000 miles later, it still works with no problems.

Here is the material I used, Napa part number 784553.

I have subsequently discovered that a simple wooden coffee stirrer is even easier to read.

I like the holes idea.
I like the file idea even more.
It's simple enough to actually work well : )

On edit: I mean for the American Sport Bike dipstick. NOT the stock plastic one.

Second edit: Wow, I had no idea typing A,B,S (without the comas ofcourse) made an insta link to American Sport Bike. That's pretty cool : )
