Y'know how H-D comes out with some sort of historical-ish remake of a previously built bike every so often? Well, it's been 30 years now since the release of what, in my meager opinion, was the most gorgeous Harley ever built, the XLCR. OK, I know that it was a flop and all that, and it would be just plain dumb to even consider it.

But I was kind of thinking about some alternative fairing for my 9, something decidedly different, that used a single, potentially very POWERFUL headlight. I wonder what that XLCR fairing, and a resculpted, XR style tail section, on a jet black XB, w/ black powdercoated frame and wheels, would look like.............

While I'm at it, let's put a 3.812" bore kit on it, and a primary setup off of a 12...........

I'd do it (still might) but right now, Smokescreen and I are going for a little ride.

Those A/T's remind me of how hard I searched for originals to replace the ones on my XLCR.

I finally found a pair in Dallas and they were pricey.

I asked the guy who worked on my bike . . "they were crummy tires when they were new, what makes you think they are any better at 10 years old?"

I went with 591's.

THE XLCR was an absolute hoot to ride.

You know. The more I look at that HD the more I like it. I'd own one.

I have thought that was one of the coolest H-D's for as long as I can remember. When I was a little kid a good friend of my dad's had one ( as well as a black and orange XR1000 which he still has) and it was one of the first bikes that made me really interested in motorcycles and motorcycling.

Every time I see him I hound him to sell me the XR and it never works.

that's the bike i saw on a poster in the nato base store in naples italy back in 1978 that made me want to own a harley more than anything else. by that time i only had about a year left to go and didn't want to worry about a car payment. i am truly glad that erik came along though.

the XRs got my attention when I was little........Evel Kneivel rode, and jumped one!

Then there is that Springsteen fella,

I had one of the Sears chopper bikes back then and I had an Uncle with a Wide Glide(?) that fixed me up with HD stickers
for the little plastic tank. This was WAY before OCC and WCC, and I thought it was sooooo cool! I also found out
just how squirelly choppers handle.

I couldn't find a pic of my exact bike, but this is very similar. Bannana seat and big buckhorn bars and all.
It was much cooler than the kids in town that had 2 forks welded end to end to build their own choppers.

God, why did I let myself get talked out of that XLCR that, like Alan, had me sold on seeing that poster alone. Ended up buying a total lemon of an XLH instead, on the advice of someone whom I trusted. Oh well, it just makes me lust after it that much more. I recall seeing one in a magazine years back, and it had been fitted with some wild engine; I think it was one of those XR based, twin carb monsters that had also been stuffed into a super lightweight frame and was tested by Cycle World. I cant remember exactly, but it may have been built by Axtell. That would have been a sweet combo, as would the XR1000 engine in the XLCR. I guess if I could go down to my local H-D dealer and order any possible combination of anything ever produced (for street use, anyway) by the mighty Company, it would be that one.

Court, it's funny, but every XLCR owner I've ever talked to has said more or less the same thing about the bike regarding tires; once fitted with decent rubber, the bike is a total joy to ride. I'd love to ride one myself, (especially if I held the title to one!).

I've checked out some of the aftermarket bodywork fabricators, and one of them has a killer deal on a very nice Dunstall style fairing/windscreen kit which is very similar to the XLCR setup. I think I might just pick one up and mock it up on the bike to see how it looks; if it just doesn't cut it, I have a mutant XS650 that I know it will look great on.......
