Just as the post says. I have an 06 Uly (sat in the HD store till about 3 months ago when I bought it) I have put 2500 miles on the bike since then and there seems to be some frame discoloration. It almost looks like water spots but they didnt come off when I washed the bike. anyone else have similar issues? I am kinda thinking its some sort of oxidation process but I havent heard of this ever before.

It is a semi-gloss finish, if you start buffing you'll never stop.

Try washing it with simple green and hose it off really well. Follow up with a drying cloth before it dries.

I don't know if this is the same situation. I noticed small spots on my City ( where the inside of my legs contact the frame ).

In my case, they appeared after I purchased some textile H20 proof pants. I am certain that these textile pants are just far more abrasive than jeans or leathers.

I tried to wash off these small spots, only to come to the conclusion that paint had been removed by my textile panted chicken legs.

It's a touch up paint thing.

I have those stain spots on my Uly. They will not come out or off. Mine has a large area at the front of the frame, a spot on the swingarm at the dipstick from oil and the frame paint is worn on the sides from pants and boots. The stains are in the color on mine and there to stay unless I repaint. Also the one on the front of mine is in the shape and direction of something that splashed off of the road. Don't buff it or you will have a shiny spot as Etennuly said.

I have this on my cityx. My aerostich was abrasive enough to dull the frame color.

I figure if I go through the work of sanding/painting the frame, it will just get scratched in a few weeks anyhow.

I was thinking of something more permanent. Maybe some of that 3m paint film they use on the front of cars as a stone guard.

I haven't worked all the details out yet.

Buy some good cleaner wax/polish. It'll take the spots out and give the powder coat on the frame some TLC. You really should take care of powder coat the same way you do paint.

I have a powder coating shop. A guy calls complaining about his jack stands I did for him 6 mos prior. I tell him to bring them. When they arrive it took 3 seconds of me looking at them before I asked him if he had been "cleaning" them with a scotch brite pad. "Umm no I used a sponge with the green thing on the back" I walk over to my cleaning suppies and grab a scotch brite sponge still in the wrapper and a sheet of scotch brite. Then I told him how my wife did the exact same damage he did all over the kitchen counters and cabinets one day. Using one of those sponges and how I've banned her from using them. To wrap this story up...

Treat your powder coated items like they were painted. Wash'em & wax'em and it look pretty for a long time.

Chris:

Good advice. It requires similar treatment to paint. I even use a paint sealant, seems to help keep stuff looking NICE.

Well I have tried to clean it off and wax it with Ibiz products. The stuff works wonders on everything else I use it on, but it didnt help the Uly frame. I am guessing that the only way I can fix this now is to get it touched up. Which is kind of crazy seeing as how its still pretty much a brand new bike. It is just strange though, the Uly is my 4th XB and this has been the only one I have owned with this issue.

Try this
http://www.meguiars.com/?auto-detailing-clay/Smoot h-Surface-Clay-Kit

I found the kit at Advance Auto. It removed rattle can overspray and a huge amount of polishing swirl.

Be careful with clay bars, that means... FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS!

This has been voiced before in the UK, where the owner had a brand new Uly with a discoloured frame. Buell UK denied any responsibility and told the owner it was his fault for 'rubbing his legs aginst the frame'.
I hope you have more luck than he did getting it sorted.

I had a few spots on the swingarm, but I suspect I did it myself by spilling a little brake fluid on them. A can of graphite grey frame paint from American Sport Bike did the trick. Now I wax my frame every once in a while and it still looks like a brand new bike.

I had the same problem on my 06 when I picked it up a couple of weeks ago. Over the weekend I used a very weak concentration of simple green and washed the frame and swingarm. I then dried it off and applied some Mothers carnuba cleaner wax. When buffing it out my rag turned black. Then I followed it up with some Griots best in show wax. Looks a million times better. You can still tell a slight discoloration but you have to look really hard.

it seems that the "stains" are more likely to show up where the legs don't touch.

But on Chris's frame, its all over. We're currently trying to get ahold of the powder coating company that actually does the Buell frame powder coating.

Guys ... it's a powdercoat -I disagree with treating it like paint - it's much harder than paint and will not respond like paint will when using compounds meant for paint .. typical rubbing/buffing compounds will not work 100%

Neither will most spray on cleaners, those usually create staining as well ..

Crusty had some issues with his Uly at Homecoming after he had tried to wax it and had similar staining .. which I was able to get out for him ..

What you want to use is a VERY very fine metal polish with a soft cloth or microfiber with light to medium pressure as to not permanently darken the frame color ... more specifically an aircraft aluminum polish works very well ..

I have used it with success on the XB frames, and on a high gloss powder coat that has been scuffed up badly ...

Hope this helps ... any other questions about stuff like this shoot me a PM .. it's what I do for a living ... www.cleanestcars.com ... I am actually contracted to take care of bikes as well for a few local HD and Buell dealerships ..
