Can anyone point me in the direction a nice relatively small tank bag, with a map holder, that fits XB's? I have seen (online) the Buell Tank and Deluxe Tank Bags and they seem bigger than what I want. I just need to hold a map and a few small items. | ||

The Buell tank bags are pretty small. Way smaller than the typical tank bag. I have the standard bag and it's a lot smaller than any other bag I've owned. You can forget about putting an 8.5" x 11" map on top. It has burly, easy-to-operate zippers that are a blessing when you're in gloves. The Buell bags look like they are better-integrated with the shape and style of the XB. Because the XB uses a plastic pseudo-tank, we're locked out of the huge selection of magnetic bags. | ||

Magnetic bags aren't a problem. Get some big flat washers, and glue them to the underside of the air box cover. I guess if you have one of the see-through covers, that might be a bit ugly... | ||

Marsee makes bags for the XB's. They are a universal style fittment. I currently have it mounted to my 98 Triumph Tiger. I would imagine you could use it on all kinds of bikes. Smokescreen (Message edited by smokescreen on September 04, 2007) | ||

For those with the Buell bags...Any problems reading maps? Most tank bags I have seen lay nearly flat on top of the 'tank.' The Buell bags seem to be significantly tilted toward the front. Oh and does anyone know the dimensions of the Buell bags? Not much info on the Buell site. | ||

Also, how do you attach the universal tankbags(3 or 4 strap) on a Buell? Looking at putting one on a Ulysses. | ||

I have a Cortech Mini-Mag on my Dyna FXD (it has a steel tank with a flat and bare top, nothing else there). That stays in place perfectly, won't scratch, and has never moved a bit. It comes with a safety tether as a "just in case" backup, I have that around a bar riser. It has a handle and strap so you can take it off and walk away with it. Also has a small "grommeted" hole so you can run an electric lead into the case. I use mine for the "electrical utility room" for any thing electric that I want to look at, listen to, or draw warmth from. Glitch's idea of the washers inside the cover might work for you. If you can heat some pieces of metal and hammer them to shape on a sand bag with a ball pein hammer, you can probably get the washers to match the interior shape well and get a good grip on the bag's magnets. I have the Buell tankbag, and like it. The map is held in a clear vinyl sleeve which is held with velcro so you can flip it over. Nice bag, 5 years old now, use it on my 9R and orange Uly. I fabricated a mount to hold my Garmin Streetpilot GPS and I-PASS on the front of the bag. I recommend it | ||

I have the small Nelson Rig on my Uly and it'ts been working out great for a couple of months now. The trick is that the rear strap goes in the hole where the the front tang on the seat goes. It works fine for me. | ||

I purchased my second tank bag and found it to be the perfect size. Its the cortech super 10 liter strap mount. The only thing i had to change was the foam bottom. It was way larger than it needed to be so I trimmed it to better fit. If you would like a pic of how it would look let me know and Ill send you one. Good Luck, John. | ||

I really like the Nelson-Rigg tank bags. I used the large on my 12R for daily commuting to work, and it was great- the small bag looks to be just as nice. Minor mods to make the straps fit the way I liked them, then snap on and off as needed... The angle for the map is just about perfect | ||

I have the Buell deluxe bag. And I have noticed that the map pocket area is small and oddly shaped. It’s also tilted forward a bit. But both are only minor problems. I still like the fit and finish of the bag. It also works incredibly well with the City X. I have heard a lot of complaints of it moving around on people but I think if you put the X on it really holds it in place. I am happy, I can fit a 6 pack of my fav non-alcoholic beers in it. Bottles or cans. That’s all I need | ||

I wound up ordering the Marsee 6 Liter Ciao Borsa from ebay. I hope it fits because I am riding 1500+ miles through WV & VA backroads next week. | ||

Watch your speed in VA. If you are going 15 over, it's an automatic felony for reckless driving. Driving as little as 15 MPH over the limit on an interstate highway now brings six license demerit points, a fine of up to $2500, up to one year in jail, and a new mandatory $1050 tax. The law also imposes an additional annual fee of up to $100 if a prior conviction leaves the motorist with a balance of eight demerit points, plus $75 for each additional point (up to $700 a year). Wow! That is nothing short of brutal! I'd hate to think how bad the driving environment must have been that they implemented such draconian measures. Or is it about generating cash revenues. Reading the maps ain't any more of a problem than driving and reading a map in a car. However the lasting experience of the buell bag is not what i hoped for. In 1.5 yrs my buell bag has the pads on the bottom of the bag comeing off and the fabric holding the ziper on the main bag and the external bag has worn out already. It should have lasted longer to my opinion. cause the rest of the bag looks great. | ||

And you don't think that has anything to do with your height, eyesight, (e.g. ability to focus close-up), your handlebars, your preferred riding position, and whether you are on a Firebolt, Lightning, CityX, XB12STT, Lightning Long, or Ulysses? It's not a problem for you. It is a problem for many others. As to Glitch's idea of gluing washers to the underside of the airbox cover, I'll pass. The power of magnetic attraction is drastically reduced when you space the magnet with something the thickness of a Buell airbox cover. Plus I don't know what kind of glues stick to Surlyn plastic. It may work, but I'm not going to do the experiment with my bike, tank bag, and possessions. | ||

If you search over on Big Bad and Dirty somebody tried the magnet bag using washers duck taped to the inside of the air box. Supposedly worked fine until he hit 100mph one day. | ||

Yep. Different bag with different number, size, and power of magnets might have stayed on to 120mph or might have come loose at 60mph. The tank bag might have done better if it was shorter or worse if it was taller. A different shape might tend to get wind under it that peels it off of the "tank." Just way too many variables. I really don't want a face full of tank bag at triple digit speeds. |
