So perhaps my quest to find a performance exhaust that won't make me go deaf, alienate my neighbors or aggravate the local noise sensative police has brought me to Europe.

After reading the thread above, I sent Matt at Trojan an e-mail and he said he is looking in to the Quat D exhaust and also pointed me in the direction of the beautiful Remus pipe and HP Hot Performance pipe, both stamped for Europes noise requirments and both found on his web site:

I was just wondering if anyone else had any experience with either product and what your thoughts were. Since Kevin isn't making the Quiet Drummer anymore, I am looking for a pipe that can fit my needs:

* Looks good
* Is reasonbly quiet (Has a nice sound without noise)
* Increases Performance without a HUGE midrange power dip (as in Buell Race Pipe)

Also, can anyone give me some insight to what the European noise requirments are. For a good reference point, would an "E stamped" exhaust be louder or quieter than the Buell Race Pipe?

E marked exhausts have to comply with the European noise limit of 98db.They are much quiter than the race kit pipe, but will still give a much more satisfying sound than the stock item.

Most of the quality E marked mufflers have removable baffles (db killers) in the tail pipes so you can liberate a bit more noise if you want to (for track use only of course ;) ) With the baffles remved they are around the same volume as the race kit item.

The Remus and the HP exhaust are both top quality items made from all stainless steel, so it just depends on whether you want twin outlets or a single one : )

I should have more info on the QD exhausts tomorrow.

I have the Remus/Sebring pipe and it's not bad with the baffle inserts fitted however the bike runs better with them out but it's pretty noisy.

So far I like the Remus and think it looks the best, and I did a search of old Remus posts, very interesting (some say stock ECM, some say Race, some say big power dip, others like it). I still like the Drummer, if only I could get a quiet version. Lastly the Hot Performance and QD exhaust look interesting, but it is so hard to find any info on them, such as which ECM to use, what they look like mounted on a bike, etc. I want to make an educated decision, but am lacking information. Maybe we can petition Kevin to make the quiet Drummers again, even if it cost more.

We do offer pipes for the tube frame bikes 9not HSA), but unfortunately not in the 2.5" header size that US bikes have.

Lastly the Hot Performance and QD exhaust look interesting, but it is so hard to find any info on them, such as which ECM to use, what they look like mounted on a bike,

The HP exhaust can use either the race kit or stock ECM (as can the Remus), although most of the aftermarket cans will benefit from something like a Remus Powerizer fuel injection controller to optimise the fuelling throughout the rev range.
Most aftermarket cans will lose a little mid range in order to get peak power increases, but Remus and HP are the least affected of the pipes we have tried. I am still awaiting detail of the QD exhaust but here are pictures of their pipes:

Apparently that is the old setup, the QD new pipe is diferent looking. Which pipe do you like more, HP or Remus? Which has a deeper sound? How does the Remus injection controller work?

Just found it on your website, looks interesting. Will it work on US-spec bikes? Would you still recommend it with a Race ECM, or does it work well enough with the stock ECM?

Sean, one more thought on the Remus, it is a nicely made pipe and fits well and the removable baffles are a plus, however the flared tail pipes can ground out if you are using the bike at the track (I doubt it would be a problem on the road) As an indication of the quality service Remus provide, they gave me a brand new (modified) system when the grounding problem became evident on my pipe - it still grounds slightly but that probably has something to do with a few extra Kilos I'm carrying.
p.s. a second thought, you need to be careful jacking the bike after fitting the Remus as it is not designed for jacking as I think is true of most replacement systems.

Surveyor: You're right there. I think the only aftermarket pipe that can be used as a jacking point is the Spec Ops pipe, and that's only because it is a modified stock muffler that leaves the support bracing intact.

Maybe the drummers that use the OEM muffler as the base, but not all of them do, right? Anyone know for sure?

Spec Ops is also the only one (other than one REALLY expensive European model) that leaves the active exhaust servo operational.

I think I am torn between the Remus and Drummer. I just got an e-mail back from Kevin saying he would be willing to make mine quieter than normal, and it is less expensive, while Matt at Trojan also sent me a note with Remus info that is attractive.

Maybe we can convince Matt to do a European exhaust shootout, and include the quiet Drummer...

I'll be very interested to read what this thread turns up. Actually, I like my stock exhaust at speed, but wish it had just a little more thump at idle. I've got a Drummer on my S3 (yes, he can do tuber can) and while it sounds great, I really don't want my Uly to be that loud.

I am 100% with you Hughlysses. I don't even need more power, just smoother power delivery and better sound, especially at idle. I want sound, not noise.

The main problem with the European stuff is that the exhange rate is awful right now, 2:1 for the British Pound over the American dollar.

Maybe everyone who wants a quiet Drummer can start a thread in Kevin's forum just so he knows how much interest there is out there.

I know Kevin has made a few "quiet" Drummers in the past.
I think it's just a matter of adding extra baffling material but only he knows for sure.

It'something you gotta ask for. Since the mass majority wants loud, I reckon there's not a lot of thought put into advertising a quiet model.

It'd be good for Kevin to know that there are a lot of us who like a good sounding, good performing pipe that's relatively quiet.

Hi Sean,
QD actually list two types of pipe for the XB on their site. The one pictured above and a full race system that has a single mufler and includes header pipes. They may well have a new model though and not updated their site yet. I have spoken to the new UK distributor today and he is ringing me back with prices and details later so I should have more info by tomorrow. They have only just taken on the QD franchise though so it may be a case of the blind leading the blind for a while ;)

As for personal preference, I have to sit on the fence a little bit here, as it depends on what you want from your exhaust.

The Remus is incredibly solidly built and would probably survive a nuclear attack along with the cockroaches. It has no rivets, is fully welded and needs no repacking. It is however quite heavy at around the same weight as the stock muffler.
The HP is individually hand made and again is very well built but is more traditional in that it is of rivetted construction. All the internals are stainless and the end caps are billet aluminium. The weight is much less than the stock pipe or the Remus, and power is slightly higher as well.

I have always used the HP cans on our race bikes and have never had any issues. If I was doing very high mileage or used the bike in all weathers then I might prefer the Remus.

The Remus Powerizer works like a fully automatic TFi unit and connects in exactly the same way. For people who are only doing slight modifications (exhaust/airbox) and don't have the need to have a specialised and fully adjustable mapping system then it is an excellent option for 99% of road riders. The unit features a high speed micro processor which monitors factors such as engine speed and load and optimises fuelling automatically. All of the feedback we have on these units (for Buell and other applications) has been excellent, and it really is a 'fit and forget' unit.

If anyone wants a Remus exhaust for an XB9 then we have a customer who is selling one for GBP300 (US$595 approx). The pipe is the polished version and has covered less than 500 miles from new. It is only for sale because the guy has traded up to an XB12 (Remus have different exhausts for XB9, XB12 and Uly models). Shipping to the USA would be around GBP65 (US$125 approx).

Well spotted, glad to see you are on the ball and spotted the deliberate mistake there ;) US price should of course read US$1340 approx and not 134.

There is also a new set of headers available from HPE in Italy. These are all titanium and weigh next to nothing : )
Price would be around US$1100 a set (without mufler).
Nice though....

Gonna need to see a dyno chart of these choices for XB9. I want quieter, but dread going back to the dreaded "midrange hole" of the XB9 race muffler and some of the others. Currently running a "quiet" version of the Drummer, but it is only very marginally more quiet than the standard Drummer; does NOT feature additional baffling. (Drummers are not baffled.)
