Jim and I went to the races this weekend @ VIR. Upon leaving we got separated.

Somehow I apparently got in front. (I'm still wondering how, as the last time I saw him he was crossing the bridge over the track ahead of me.)

On 58 close to intersection of 645 (a 10th from the Old Mill Golf course) at approximately 6:15 p.m. Jim attempted to pass an older couple in an S-10 blazer that turned left in front of him.

He impacted the right rear of the vehicle.

There was a Volunteer Rescue Squad vehicle on it's way to another call behind him so, he received almost immediate attention. He was helicoptered to Roanoke where he passed away.

There are more details on my end but those are essentially the details I got from his cousin who spoke with the Troopers who worked the wreck.

There will we a receiving of friends @ United Methodist Church in Fountain City (Knoxville, next to the Creamery) from 5 to 7 Thursday evening.

I think that I speak for everyone here in offering our heartfelt condolences to those close to Jim Garvey.

Although it brings little consolation in such a time of loss, please take some comfort in knowing that Jim was doing something that he loved.

Rest in Peace

My condolences. I always hate to hear of another rider down.

As was said above though, at least he went out doing something he loved. There are worse ways to go.

Thank you all for the kind words.

Jim was probably the biggest reason I bought the XB. He was a meticulous wrench among other talents.

The fact that he traded an ST4 Ducati for the bike you see pictured made me take a MUCH more serious look at the brand. (he wasn't one for impulsive moves thus, I thought there may be something to this Buell thing.)

My most heartfelt condolences go out to Jim, his friends and family. Being a firefighter i see this far too often. I have 2 sets of brothers.. one here and one with the fire department. either loss is just as important. Any loss is a terrible loss for everyone. Just save me one or two twisties when i get there someday Jim, but tear em up till then. R.I.P brother.. Pegs down...

My condolences to Jim's family and friends.

The only "good" that comes from tragedies such as this is it makes new riders like ME even MORE cautious then ever.

Like someone said: "Here today, gone tomorrow".

I myself lost a friend to a motorcycle accident on New Years Day, 2005. Now Jeff Wolf will ride with Jim Garvey in another place...

I felt it worthwhile to re-post what my pal Greg "Slime" Hime parked on our local rider board. (We recently figured out we've been riding over 40 years. Spooooky!)

quote:

Thanks Phil for posting this. Jim was one of my best friends (itchy being my oldest and dearest) I had only known him for about 10 years, but it seemed like it was much longer than that as we had very similar upbringings.I also worked with him daily on most of his projects. He is the reason I work where I do. I was the last person to speak to jim, as he was trying to locate Phil and was concerned he was ok. I sent him back to look for Phil, but they never found each other.

I was also supposed to be there, but had planned to only do the road atlanta leg of the trip.

Jim was a very meticulous person about everything he did, so his "house" was in order. There were over 700 people at visitation! You can not find anyone that knew him, that didn't like him! Phil and I were pallbearers and we were honored to be asked. Phil and I were a very select few who Jim would ride with. He had to trust you a lot to ride with you, as he preferred to travel alone, on his own time.

Jim's son Josh has been a rock for his mother. Josh wanted to pick out the casket, so he got one with lots of chrome, because he knew jim would think it was cool! It has been extra tough because his wife and my x were best friends. There was not a week went by that our families were not together until my divorce. It was hard to be around all that too.

I was only asked twice to sell "that damn motorcyle", but that was my sister ( who lost a good friend a month ago to a motorcycle wreck in grainger county).

One of the things josh said to me when he asked me to be a pallbearer was that his father had died doing what he loved on the motorcycle he loved! I think that's what matters the most. He didn't work all his life only to retire and die before doing what he wanted. He had gone to bike week every year for 9 years just to ride with a friend and watch the races and the people. I always said I would go, but never made it, and that too makes me sad. I know he is in a better place and I will see him again someday. Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers, he deserved them.

GOD SPEED JIM GARVEY!
