brought my 05 xbs in for 10k service and got it back with a chip in the the frame paint and it was missing the intake air scoop. they found the misplaced air scoop but the dealer claims the paint job was defective and the chip wasn't their fault because it would have chipped off just from brushing against it. now they're telling me that Harley/Buell does not have paint to match the graphite grey frame paint!! they said they mixed their own paint and tried to touch it up but the color is too light and they have to try and mix something else to match it better. i've been holding with harley customer service for over one hour now to ask about the paint. am i being lied to? i see american sportbike has touchup spray cans. is this oem paint or an aftermarket match? any information i can provide to the dealer would help. | ||

gave up on customer service after waiting on hold for an hour and 45 minutes. left a message asking for the paint code. unbelievable. anyone have the paint code so i can tell the dealer? | ||

Racer, I am sure the brothers would like to know the name of that dealer to put on the "avoid at all costs list". Just to put a few things in perspective: I. The frame is NOT painted. It is powdercoated, with a very thick and strong powder coating. It does not just chip off. 2. The American Sport Bike Paint is the factory paint. It matches pretty well, unlike the "Magnesium Tone" that is supposed to match the twelve engine cases. The part number is : M1310.1AAYBP Graphite Grey 3. I would suggest that the dealer have the entire frame powder coated. Grand Stand Designs can do a perfect color match. | ||

Thanks for the part number. Hopefully it won't come out looking like s***. The service manager said he thinks the powder coat job was defective because it feels slightly bumpy around the area where it was chipped. My warranty just ran out in June so basically he says they're doing me a favor trying to touch it up. | ||

Your dealer is defective. I have heard stuff like that before as they try to cover for their mistakes. Your bike is out of warranty? If you have owned it for some time would you not have noticed the chipping of the powder coat? It doesn't matter if the warranty is expired or not, if they damaged the bike it is their responsibility to make it right. That is not doing you a favor by touching it up. They obviously would be happy to fix it under warranty if it were newer, thereby passing the cost of their mistake on to Buell. List the dealer name so that fellow Buellers can be ware of them and their lousy way of doing business. | ||

Not to thread jack, but since the frame is powdered coated, can anything be done to restore the finish? Between my super suit, and luggage my frame is looking sort of sad. | ||

I've used the Buell rattle cans, I can't tell where I sprayed/fogged it in. Just don't paint up to a tape line and leave an edge. I wiped the frame down with laquer thinner to clean off any oils/dirt, sanded the chipped area to a smooth edge and sprayed away. I'd challenge the best body guy out there to show me where I touched mine up. | ||

I too have used the Buell Graphite Grey paint from American Sport Bike. I painted my subframe with it, and touched up a spot on the right side of my swingarm where I spilled some brake fluid. It matches so well, you can't tell the difference between the paint and the original powercoat. I say sand the area down smooth, wiper her down with some denatured alcohol or similar solvent, and blow paint. Another neat little tip I got turned onto recently is to use tinfoil for masking off areas you don't want paint on. Worked great covering my engine when I painted my headerwrap with the headers still on the bike. |
