'05 XB9SX.
I adjusted the clutch (And cable) and also primary. Bike shifts great but once hot, the bike is getting hung up in gear and requires an additional pull of the clutch lever to change gears. Happens sporadically.
Again, only happens when the bike is hot.
Any ideas?

I also have noticed increased shifter resistance once the bike is hot. Although mine does not seam to be related to the clutch. I just adjusted the clutch and it did not change anything. I think it has something to do with the viscosity of the fluid when hot and its relationship to the clutches or the gears themselves.

what fluid do you run. I am running Formula+ but I am wondering if maybe a different fluid will provide better shifting

On my M2 I found that I had to add about 1/2 turn (three flats on the hex nut) on the mid cable lever free play adjuster (lengthening the cable housing) after the bike was well warmed up.

That made the adjustment seem a little on the too little side at the clutch perch when everything was cold. But it never caused any other problems.

The adjustment at the clutch perch is to have a 1/16" gap when you pull the cable end away from perch. So it may be that I was not pulling out on the cable hard enough. But after a while I just set it a little on the tight side and it was fine warmed up.

I also found, as others have, that the best clutch and transmission performance was obtained when all four adjustments were made in the order of, (1) primary chain adjustment, (2), fully loosening the lever free play, (3), adjusting the clutch adjusting screw inside the primary, and last, (4), adjusting the clutch lever free play with the cable length adjuster.

That is all well discussed and detailed in the KV and it might be worth going through it all one time. Once you get it all right, occasional minor tweaks on the lever freeplay will be all that is needed until another primary chain adjustment is needed and then you do all of them again.

Jack- I made my adjustments exactly as you listed. I will try to tighten up the clutch cable (even more) and see what happens.
Initially, I was having some shifting issues (Popping out of gear occassionaly, etc) and the clutch adjustment helped a lot.
I'm curious what happens in the engine to cause the clutch pull to change when hot.

I'm using the Harley fluid, btw.

Scotts, Make sure you don't have the case overfilled and adjust the clutch first with alot of cable slack and then adjust your cable for the free play. Do you have a service manual? If not I can give you the specs out of mine

I have the manual but thanks for the offer. Primary has 1 qt of the Harley stuff in it.

I'd think that just the bits and pieces expanding a little from heat could account for the effect of losing a little of the "pull in" with it all warmed up. It's like the primary chain is tighter when warmed up too.

The stuff on that side of the Buell engines is definitely responsive to the "feel" of individual techs or mechanics.

It like if you forget to take all the slack out and pull the lever several times before adjusting the lever freeplay, you'll probably find too much freeplay almost immediately when you first use it. It's the little details...

I'd say it was an area where, once I got it right, I was very happy with it. But I'd be a little surprised if a dealer could get it "right" and to my standards on the first try every time. I've not used a dealer yet and am happier for that and better off too as near as I can tell.

You may have the primary chain too tight. The primary chain specs have one measurement when hot and a "looser" measurement when cold. The chain should be adjusted to spec at the tightest point; these chains usually have two tight spots as you rotate the engine. Since shifting is getting harder when the bike gets hot, it seems the chain is getting too tight.

I'd suggest you re-check your primary chain adjustment.
