Hey guys,
I rode my uncles M2 a year ago and ever since I have had the itch!
Finally a month ago I picked up an almost new 03 XB9S with only 1500 mls. Everything seems to be fine(meaning the bike is freakin' awesome!!!), but I do notice a background noise coming from the engine that sort of sounds like grinding. Any thoughts? I read on one post that it may be the primary chain needing adjustment, but also read on this guys page
http://www.freewebs.com/martin_brown/buellpage.htm
about his mainshaft bearing going titsup.
I don't have a warranty and hope to god it isn't anything major.
I have also heard the belt on this model is weaker than the later models. Is it possible to upgrade and are there any other problems I should look for?
I am also looking for a PDF of the service manual for my bike as it didn't come with one.
Thanks a million guys! This site ROCKS!

i've heard fuel pumps that sound like blenders, could be that too.
as for your manual, i assume you're looking for an owners manual. go to www.buell.com, register in the owners area and they have the owners manuals there. may not go all the way back to 03, but close. you could also order one from a dealer. enjoy the ride!

I was under the impression that they didn't make "S" models in '03? Are you certain it's not an '04 that was purchased in late '03?

In any case... Check the primary chain tension. That's about the right number of miles for it to start making noise. Check it every 1500 miles for the first 10K. After that it'll pretty much stop stretching.

It's always hard to diagnose a noise without hearing it.

However this could be a defective front isolator, which connects the front cylinder to the frame.

Here is a photo of one. Pay no attention to the LSL steering damper mounted under this one. You are looking for this space between the rubber and the frame mount. If there is no space, it means that the rubber in the isolator has failed, and the is making the noise you hear.

Buell has upgraded this part, call Andy at Appleton HD, one of our sponsors to get a new one if yours has failed.

I have an '03 XB9S too.
got a manual for the firebolt off of
repairmanualclub.com for free. most of the stuff is the same on the S and R models.
but if your doing down and dirty electrical stuff i'd by the correct paper version.

what kind of bike are you coming off of? any?

I came off a Yamaha FZ6 and i thought at first my engine had problems, but its just a noisy S.O.B !!! love it and get used to it, hahahahaha
