For some reason I can't post there, but all the other stuff aside it sounds like you need a TPS reset and have your idle adjusted. Clear your AFV and then reset it after that. BTW, its not 10 minutes at above 2500 RPM, its 3500 RPM.

i have already done a TPS reset and the mechanic did adjust the idle prior to me picking the bike up the last time. i should not have to have these reset every 1000 miles...which is what i have had to do lately.

Then I'd say the TPS itself might be bad.

just as a side note, on my last bike
'04 Yamaha FZ6. the TPS took a dump and it would act somewhat like that. it would die at random times, and misfire if i restarted the bike and just run like shit. but if i cycled the key (resetting everything on that bike) it would run fine for a good week or two then back to shit. it took months for the techs to figure the problem out, well actually they didnt, i did after doing some much needed online research.
they replaced it and away she went running perfect again.
I know there completely different bikes, but the fuel injection systems are pretty similar (both real real basic systems)
that utilize a TPS sensor. and if that TPS is sending some erratic values to the ECM then you can expect a not so pleasant ride.
GOOD LUCK!!!! I have been there, and i hate it! i hope my beloved Buell never takes me down that road :-)

i took the bike back to the dealership today, and talked about the tps and iac with him. he said that he had already replaced the TPS earlier. also that the unit on top of my airbox controlled the valve in the exhaust (that is no longer there, race exhaust now) so it couldn't be causing the problems either. back to the drawing board....he said he's going to be calling the harley directly to figure out what to do next on it.

IAC in under the airbox. Tech should have known this... I'd find a new one unless your getting one hell of a deal on labor costs. Also are you sure the TPS was reset correctly? Have seem countless bikes that were done incorrectly by "trained techs" there are good ones out there but they are few and far between.

Yikes...

The IAT sensor is in the airbox... Not on top of the airbox and under that airbox cover.

I would almost bet that he didn't set the TPS correctly if he doesn't know where to find the IAT.

You have to back the idle all the way out so that the throttle plate closes all the way and set it there. Then crank it back up to ~4.3-4.5V so it'll idle when you start it. Then get it hot and set the idle close to 1000.

I'd find another dealer.

Have him call Buell... Not Harley.

It sounds like he's trying real hard though so maybe by the end of this you'll have a competent Buell tech?

Also that idle screw is actually a cable that can get bound up and throw off the entire process (found that with mikexlr's bike) took us forever to find why his bike ran for shit, changed cable proper tps resetand he's happy as a pig in well you know

One mistake that can be made is that when the throttle is completely closed and the TPS reads zero, the technician does not reset the TPS because they think it is calibrated correctly. In most cases when you close the throttle the TPS will read positive numbers like 0.4 or 0.6. The software does not read negative numbers so there will be a false reading if the TPS is -0.8 then the software will read 0. I know because I did it once.

Otherwise I would drain the gas and check the ET parameters. Watch front spark timing go to zero around 320F.

BTW, its not 10 minutes at above 2500 RPM, its 3500 RPM.

Actually, on the XB9 engines, the AFV works from 2,000 to 5,000 and on the 12 engines, 2,000 to 4,000 RPMs. My testing with DirectLink shows that with a steady throttle and relatively level ground, the AFV resets in as little as two miles.

Maybe, seeing as how you are asking folks here on BadWeB for advice/help, you could please post the issue here rather than sending us elsewhere for your write-up? This will also aid others here who may need help with the same issue now and in the future. : )

Here is my problem (per request): "My bike would not start, crank then die crank then die over and over. I finally limped it till it was warm and then it would run "ok." took it to the local buell shop.
they said needs new ECM (i have full race kit)...didn't fix it.
new intake seals.....didn't fix it.
new fuel injector o-rings...didn't fix it.
new complete throttle body....the bike will now run again, with all the other new stuff on as well.

now it does not like to run when its cold. it will crank die, crank die, crank give gas(2k rpm and hold for 20 sec) then it will idle "ok" but when the bike comes up to temp it runs just fine EXCEPT.......now the rpms come down very slowly from 2k down. I engine brake a lot and at 2k it does not slow the bike down anymore. idle is at around 1k rpm.

any good buell machanics have any ideas? i'm trying help out the buell tech up here and get some other ideas...the buell factory guys that he keeps calling don't really have a good idea either.

oh, its a '04 XB12S with a full Race Kit and 06 inner airbox lid.

thanks guys.

Aaron"

just an update on this. I am now TDY again for the Air Force so my baby is back at the dealership this week while i'm out of town. He says the only sensors on the bike that have not been replaced, with relation to it running at least, are the O2 sensors so he is going to replace those next. I know they don't read at startup and so does he, just eliminating possibilities. from there he said he was going to call harley/buell and try to figure out where to go next, if he has to bring another tech in to help he said that he was going to do so just to get the bike running right. last time i was in the shop he had an 04 firebolt with a race kit that was having the same problems as mine. TPS keeps being the comment, in his defence he has reset it for me before and the bike has run awsome. 5,000 mile service for example the TPS was done and the bike would scream and run without a single problem in all weather conditions (including 19 degrees F, it was cold!)

I have faith in him as a mechanic since he has been doing my service and work since i bought the bike a year ago. Right now he can keep working on the bike as long as it takes (yes i'm getting a good deal) since i'm TDY so much i only have enough time to test his most recent work anyway.

With all that said i recently ordered the parts and download the drivers/software to get ecmspy to work. when i get back from this trip it should all be there and i'm going to try to do a TPS reset myself and see where i'm at.

It could be the 2500rpm instead of 3500rpm but i don't see how since both of them is high enough to put it into the different loop.

anyways this is just an updat and THANK YOU for allyall's (yes yall is singular ) help.
