My XB surges/misfires at steady rpm. If I accelerate through the gears it runs a bit better. So if I hold it at 4k steady I'll feel it miss and surge about 10 times a minute. Seems like this has been happening since I got the buell pro plugs, I had the stockers in there for a long time and they did well. I thought I'd ride the crap out of it to see if it got better but it hasn't

Check your manifolds for leaks by spraying electroclean where they join the cylinders when its running, If the engine idle changes they are leaking.

As mentioned before, it could be the TPS/intake leak...
But it could also be a weak ignition coil(s)
I had the same issue, and the resolution to mine was the combination of a weak coil and a skewed TPS
How this helps

Have similar symptom w/my X-1. TPS re-set did wonders. Of interest, when I went to pick the bike up, the service writer asked if I was getting any trouble codes. Told no, he said the service tech was getting a voltage reading waaay out of limits when setting the idle. Could be your TPS is in a pre-failure mode? I ordered a new one. To install later this season.

I took the bike to the dealer and found that after the tps reset when I rode it home it ran worse that it has ever. I wondered if the tps was reset wrong.

I pulled off the air box to examine for air leaks and found that the rubber stack was lilted off at an angle which revealed an opening. So I fixed that by reseating the stack into the TB and putting the box back together.

When I started the bike up today it idled decently but when I revved the engine under no load it backfired hard many times. It was so hot that I didnt bother to test ride it or do anything further.

Could the tps be set wrong? Would an intake leak affect the reset? Any ideas?

If the missing started happening about when you changes spark plugs, the problem is most likely related to that. I'd check to see if the spark plug cables are properly seated and the plugs are gapped properly.

Try another set of stock plugs.

Yours is an '03. Buell made a running improvement in the spark plug cables in '04. Get those; same part number I believe. The '03s don't seal around the spark plug at all -- contamination and misfires can be the result. Change the cables.

TPS reset: Take it back and have the dealer redo the TPS reset because it did not run right when they did it the first time. You are not paying the Service Dept for OJT on your bike.

Make sure the Service Manager knows you are dissatisfied with the work paid for and not done correctly. But be sincere, pleasant and tactful about it and, I'm sure, he'll make it right.

An intake leak will not affect the zeroing/calibration of the throttle position sensor.

As Sparky Said: An intake leak will not affect the zeroing/calibration of the throttle position sensor.

However,
IF that stack was off/Not seated down in the grove sort of speaking Your AFV could be out of Specs.....While learning.!

You could try another ride to reset the AFV and see if that helps.
