After going for a "spirited" ride without my Buell tank bag, I noticed that one of the two front straps that attach it was missing. The screw had backed out (yeah, I should have used Loctite.) It's a 2" strap with a buckle at the end. The part is only $2, but they are backordered and not a single dealer in the U.S. has one. Anyone have a spare (maybe after their tank bag was lost, damaged, stolen, etc.)? They are the same between the standard and the deluxe bags. Take the mating part into a fabric shop or hiking store and see if something matches up. | ||

Mikej, I've hit two boating stores and a hardware (actual hardware, not "home center") store and found the quick-release buckles they sell didn't fit the ones on the Buell tank bag. I wish I knew who makes the ones that Buell uses or what other products use them. I have not tried the hiking/camping/outdoor stores, though. Good suggestion. | ||

I just had mine redone because I busted one of the buckles (the fork caught it when it was flipped out). My friend disassembled the stitching for the straps and replaced both buckles with better (heavier duty) buckles. I just called her to see if she still has the good buckle kicking around (not home, left message). If so, you can have it. You can bring it in somewhere and they could make the replacement for you. If not, find someone who does that type of work (my friend reupholsters furniture, repairs motorcycle gear and equipment, and makes sail covers for boats, and that's the short list). I watched her do the repair and I think it took maybe a half hour to swap out both buckles and make new straps for the front. If you can't find anybody local to do it for you and you want to send it out to get done, she does awesome work. Just let me know and I can get you her contact info. | ||

Cruisin, thanks! I can definitely sew the strap onto a buckle if she still has the buckle. With the screw through the strap, I could even get away without doing any sewing. P.S. Sorry about yours busting. It's not the most satisfactory way to attach a tank bag, is it? | ||

No problem! It's not bad, but the first xb bag they had mounted the male end on the screw. The newer style switched to the female end and without the bag the buckle flips out and is just the right height to catch the fork in the middle of it. A quick right turn while maneuvering snapped it pretty quick. We not only mounted heavy duty velcro brand buckles, but we reversed it so the male end bolts to the bike. Still waiting for the call back. | ||

"try a outdoor/camping store." It's on my list, but there's just no standard for the quick-release buckles. You can find ten of them for 1" webbing and they will all be different and incompatible. | ||

buy the male and female ends together and replace both. Beats trying to find "the one" that fits. | ||

Then I have to undo the stitching on the bag, stitch the new part on there, etc. It doesn't just thread on. The 1" wide loop is sewn in place. | ||

I'm using what I refer to as suspenders on my tank bag straps when I'm not running the tank bag to keep the loose ends in check after there were several reports years ago of the clips messing with people's steering. I took the bag and straps to the fabric store (JoAnnes Fabrics, I think) and mixed and matched until I found one that worked. And, yep, lots of variety with no apparent standardization. hey not to hijack, but I just got my delux bag, and the instruction were missing page 2. It should have been on the back but it was blank. I imagine I can figure it out but I would like it just to make sure I dont miss something. Also has anyone developed a better attaching system that does not just leave buckles dangling around? I was thinking of some with snaps or geting some studs of sort. well sorry about your buckle. I did what buellinachinashop did on my last bike to make my own mounting straps | ||

try "DURAFLEX buckles", it look like they have all the snap fittings, clasps, buckle connectors etc. | ||

If I recall correctly, Wolfman in Colorado made Buell tank bags in the past. Perhaps they are the supplier for your bag. Ask Wolfman for advice. | ||

When I bought my tank bag used, it was missing one of the front short straps, like yours. You know that extra buckle that know one can figure out what it hooks to on the new freebie messenger bags? Yep, you guessed it, it snapped right in with just a small amount of filing (less than 1/16") around the opening. The male tabs were just short of catching, so I took a little off the opening. I just cut the strap to length and drilled a 3/16" hole in it. I waved the nylon strap in front of a propane torch to melt the fibers so it doesn't fray. Hope that helps. | ||
