A buddy of mine got a hold of me and asked me this question. I'm not sure what needs to be done. Any input? Hey Eric, long time since our last notes. Broke the shifter on my Firebolt (stupid n00b stunt!) and I replaced it. But if I tighten the bolt, the shifter gets too stiff. If I loosen the bolt, it shifts okay and returns but the bolt's a lot looser than it originally was. Am I missing something??? | ||

Hmmm. I'll have to check that (I'm the buddy--or n00b--Rich who is tyring to replace the shifter. Thanks for the tip. I just talked to the dealership over the phone; they say it should be a straighforward install but they sure aren't very helpful when they find out it's not a "real" Harley. | ||

Are you using locktite? It's a must. Locktite will allow you to keep the bolt loose enough to shift and prevent it from vibrating free. Trust me. I found out the hard way and lost that bolt 55 miles from nowhere in a canyon. I had to ride all 55 miles with the shifter hanging loose in 4th gear. All I can say is thank God for good friends (to push me off), lack of stop signs/lights (1 only, which I caught green thankfully) & the GREAT TORQUE OF THE XB9 ENGINE (from 25 to 85 MPH in one gear--not to mention some serious twisty, uphill grades at the slower speeds). A friendly shade-tree mechanic helped me diagnose the problem...embarassing, to say the least. I neglected to take the bushing out of the old lever and stick it in the new one. ooops! Problem solved! |
