At 7:35 PM Jim got on the interstate headed back to MASS.

His 12R is now equipped with a high-performance Hammer-head. (Thanks a bunch Rich for the gracious donation)

In case anyone cares, The XB12 uses the same spark plugs as a V-rod and the Harley-Davidson part number for a Buell XB head gasket is: 16770-84D. Just goes to show that if buell dealer is not near, a H-D dealer will do.

Big thanks to all who helped and gave advice. Especially FireboltEric_ma for walking us thru the engine removal procedure (it was simple!), Spidey for the gasket info, and New12R for confirming that the 9 & 12 heads were interchangeable.

I'm curious what caused the spark plug to blow itself clear of the head in the first place

If I was closer I would have drove out with a truck and trailer to get him home. Glad he is up and running.

I'd bet that the threads were cross-threaded at one point or another, and the aluminum won't take much of that.

Either that or the threads were not anti-siezed and the steel galled the aluminum when the plug was removed at some point.

Either way the result is the same...eventually the pressure would strip out the last of the threads.

Just got in, there was a huge accident on 84.

Huge thanks to Hammer for giving me head, Oh and someone took a picture of it too, and Saintly for helping me do the swap. There is NO way I could have done it without you guys.

Also thanks to the rest of the HV crew & JPB for helping me as well!!!

The bike ran GREAT all the way home.

Great story! Not uncommon in Buelldom.

Jim, I heard Curley's burned down, now that is a bad deal.

Things like this are why I love the Buell community. The people are simply amazing in their generosity

damnut glad to see all is well and you made it home....on a side note after yesterday with everyone scrambling to help w/ damnuts prob i had to take my kids out for a while. on my way home i stopped at my brothers house to use his computer and check progress with damnut and saintly's posts and my brother was shocked to see the concern we all have for each other when a problem arises(he rides a gixxer) and he commented on the fact that the bad web is one of a kind. just goes to show buell riders are very different indeed!!!!!!!!!

I tell ya that I am still amazed at all the help that I had this weekend. There were more than a few folks helping me try and get back on the road.

I can't say THANK YOU enough to Saintly who let me borrow his other XB while mine was broke. He even offered to let me use it so I could go home and come back the next weekend if we couldn't get my bike running in time. On top of that he was ALWAYS right there helping me strip down my bike and to put it back together. Unfortunately I had to go so I wasn't going to be around to help put the "donor" bike back together.

So once again I want to thank Saintly and Hammer71 for going above and beyond in helping me get out of Shit's Creek and also thank MikeXLR650, JPB, TRAMP, Hammer's mom (for cooking some great food on Sunday) and anyone else that I may have forgotten to thank.

You folks are the best!!!

Jim

The bike is fine, replaced the stripped out head with one that Hammer had laying around his garage. : )

Was able to find the correct head gasket and put in new plugs. Rode it home 200 miles, no leaks and it ran like a champ. I'm good, the bike's good.................... life is good!!!
