so the wifes a-bitchin about other bikes having something for the passenger to lean back on (luggage racks and what not, and not really "lean" per say more of a 'oh look i wont fall straight off the back' kinda thing) and after about 2 days of searching I have yet to find one with an good enough picture/description to jump on, anyone have any ideas on how to get the wife off my back...literally. getting her on a bike is not an option... i've tried. | ||

Check Ventura Racks. I have seen them mounted on Buells. They do have a "backrest" kind of mount for bags. | ||

is it enough room for the misses to actually sit on the seat? i think that was one of the racks that took up nearly the whole rear seat... I'll look into those further. | ||

I've never mounted one but I have seen a couple. You might ask Al at American Sport Bike. He has sold a ton of Ventura racks to Buellers and would know if it'd work. I know all his 2-up riding is now done on his Uly with Joanne but he has a bunch of customers who have the Ventura bag systems. (Message edited by slaughter on August 05, 2007) | ||

I've been eying the Corbin Gunfighter lady seat as well for my wife. Although the total price tag is steep! So far its the only backrest (sissy bar) seat for the XB12S I could find. | ||

I had a Ventura rack on my XB9R and it was quite sturdy...however I would not consider it a backrest and the documentation that comes with it specifically states it is not to be considered for that use. The grab bar is fairly sturdy but I honestly don't know how that works since it is behind the passenger...doesn't seem like it would do much to keep a passenger on the bike...but then again I have not done any 2up riding in a long time...and that was on a FatBoy which is a completely different situation. | ||

I don't think that he was asking for an actual backrest per se, but something to make his wife feel more secure on the back of the bike. I've heard the same complaint...."I always feel like I'm going to slide right off the back" to which I reply "hold on tighter" Personally I dislike back rests. They encourage the passenger to lean back putting their weight bias behind the rear axle. This really upsets your chassis, and in turns the passenger isn't leaning with you if they are leaning back further upsetting the suspension and chassis. It also makes the bike more wheelie prone. | ||

I would not consider it a backrest and the documentation that comes with it specifically states it is not to be considered for that use. very true....however, what the Ventura Rack does do is give you the comfort of having something behind you and take the feeling away that you're going to hit the pavement when taking off at each stop. The Rack alone is NOT comfortable. You need to have the bag on the rack for it to provide some padding. Remember, it is not a back rest and should not be relied on as such. I will say that it's not the Triple Tail on our Uly or padded back rest we had on our Honda, but it did solve the issue of my comfort level when riding on the M2. Al & Joanne are great and can offer lots of "hands on" advice. That was a big selling point for us when buying the Ventura set-up. | ||

thanks all, I'll send Al a PM/e-mail and see what he says. diablobrian, i feel the same way, back rest = wheelie magnet... and when you are just trying to cruise somewhere and your passenger is a bit squeamish as it is along with turks that LOVE to ride your ass (not kidding) 10-15cm behind your rear and inner city streets that are made of glass (shell marble and granite) not a good combo... as ulywife said, something for her rear to hit before it slides off and lands on my rear. | ||

also, i have an xb12R... the gunfighter idea looks great but just isn't going to happen... maybe i can get one of these turks to fab one up... maybe something attaching to the passenger foot pegs up to her back to allow for custom saddle bags... hmmm | ||

 well i DID say i wanted to get her off of my back, unless of course you mean to strap her to the bike itself in which case a cargo strap would be more effective. but picture this, it's 90F + out here (90% ish humidity) you'd take a woman who i know to be fairly outspoken as it is, put her on a fairly uncomfortable seat (that fix is in the works) and ride for 100km with out allowing her to move around a bit?  what'd i do to piss you off? | ||

she just doesn't want anyone to read my shirt is all.   i'm going to go see what my turkish leather/metal workers can do... maybe duplicate the rear seat mounting in aluminum and extend it so i could drop in a back rest when she wanted it. ::EDIT:: i was just informed that i do not condone calling any female a bitch or any other obscenity, through a suggestive slap to the back of the head and 1/4 of a glass of water down my back. the Ventura rack is not a back rest, it is not weighted for that, I would not recommend that as a backrest. I helped a customer to use the "love Twinkie" from harley vrod. bolted and weled to the seat frame of the lightning, it worked only as a tail stopper to keep the passenger from sliding off . | ||

ventura will work as a backrest as long as she dont really lean into it.....its sturdy enough to make her feel a little more relaxed on long rides.....oh, and a corbin seat...... | ||

I have the Buell factory custom pillion on my bike now and my passengers have told me that it it a big improvement too, plus the stock pillion cover still fits. It does not fit on the touring pillion. | ||

that is EXACTLY what I'm looking for... no shit, i had just drawn up something close to it and was about to leave to ask around town as to who could make it... that is awesome! Gowindward i owe you a 6pack for 2 reasons, one thats an awesome job that looks good and looks to be very functional, and two because you showed me a post about firebolt seats i had yet to read... the post earns you 5 beers the idea gets you 1. if you made me one I'd pay for everything including labor + beer (i like to support the American economy over the Turkish when ever possible) though you are in KS, might be able to substitute for whiskey/scotch if you preferred.  and the wife insists that I beg and grovel and that i remind you that i am dead serious.  and if not, oh well don't mind if i use your design do you? anything you'd do to improve it? Thanks for the humour. Hope your seating dillemma is in hand. I have been TRANSPORTING my kids GF to her job in the morning on the XB, simply because she starts work at 0800 and he sleeps in till 1100. She's 19 and doesnt bitch about the free ride. The seating comfort issue for my WIFE was resolved by the stock OEM saddle on her Ducati M620. That and a few hours a week on the elliptical trainer. | ||

No it's free to the world! Besides there is not really much to patent. There is nothing really novel about the idea. I really think there is VERY little demand to make it a commercially viable product too. So far the world demand has been for three. LOL |
