I've heard its ok to replace only the rear tire if the front is still good. I wondering if there is any con's to doing this. It'll be the same brand and type (dunlop qualifiers)I put both on the bike at the same time but the rear is almost to the wear bars. the front still looks pretty good. Opinions?

I do it all the time. Many here get two or even three rears to the front. My fronts are still good after 10-12,000 miles. I'm only getting about 4,000 from the rears.

I wouldn't recommend mixing and matching tire brands. Some put the center water siping on the front tire and not the rear. If the pattern of the front is different than what is intended for the rear, you may have some wet traction issues.

There is something to be said for changing them in pairs.

I used to do two rears for each front, but I found that the handling seemed to deteriorate.

Now I change them in pairs. When I did the math on this, it seemed that the improvement in handling was worth the money, to me at least.

Your mileage may vary. I use Dunlop Qualifiers.

I am very surprised that my rear tire is wearing at the same rate as my front tire. all my previous bikes always wear out the rear first.

If it extemely drastic in tire wear from front to rear, then I would say just swap out the rear.

But if its kinda iffy on the front, I would just change is, the tire is still OLD, so the rubber is dry and harder then the new rear tire. Its also the front tire which is the most import in my opinion, and its the cheaper of the two.

If you use a lot of throttle to come out of turns, you will burn up 2x rear tires for each front. I've found that even after two rears are worn the front may look fine, but may start losing grip, depending on tire type.

If you don't use a lot of throttle coming out of turns you may wear them much more evenly.

Oh yeah, I've run two different brands plenty of times. It did feel different, but not necessarily bad. Never rode in the rain though, I was in Orange County back then!

In GP they used Michelin/Dunlop combos in the early 90's when the Michelin plant burned down in Japan and they couldn't produce tires for a month or two. They were called the Michelop riders.

Opinion. For what it's worth. I've replaced many rears and few fronts. Never (yet) have had any problems that have been linked to that. Just my experience.

I do the two/one deal, but the people that recommend changing them in pairs have a good point. My front is looking really worn by the time the second rear wears.

Two rears to one front is pretty standard practice in the sport bike world. Just don't mix and match tires and you will be fine. I'd suggest ditching the Dunslops and going with something a little better performing. I prefer Pirelli Scorpion Syncs myself. Happy riding!

If you do a lot of burn-outs, you could do 6 rears to 1 front

lol. only 1 well maybe 2 short burnouta.. aka need tire warm quick. I do tend tok use the throttle a bit gingerly coming out of corners. Also the tires on the bike are maybe 3 months old so no old cracking tires or anything. After looking at a new front tire next to mine the front seems to have slightly lost its shape if that makes any sense. So I may just do both. Many places seem tko have front and rear combo's cheap. Plus I still got a little time before I need to do them. And the sync's were one of the tires i was looking at. that and the 2ct and the corsa3's. Though I do like the qualifiers.
