WTF?

I just got my '06 Firebolt back from my very local dealership: Orange County HD/Buell*.

When they first wrote up my estimate I questioned it because I informed the Service Writer who didn't know what the TPS reset was (she thought it needed "replacement") a TPS reset usually takes about 15-25 minutes on my bike. The Service Writer told me they have to write things up per hour at first. If it ends up taking less time, they will adjust the cost. So I took her word for it thinking they would adjust it to maybe 30 minutes. Not so! They charged me $95 for the TPS reset--a full hour! I questioned the charge again and you know what the Service Writer said: they charge a MINIMUM $95/hour and it took the mechanic that long to do the TPS reset!

Son of a biotch!

This is a cold reminder why I NEVER go to these dealerships!

*Orange County HD/Buell has been around for about 10 years. Back in 2004 they dropped the Buell brand because they said they didn't sell them all that much. They just recently added Buell to their lineup again about 6 months ago. I decided to go and try them out and give them a chance. I guess I won't be going back there unless I was desperate for parts! I know it's just $95 but I feel I got ripped off.

Should be one HALF hour of labor. So what ever the labor rate is at the shop minus 50%. At least thats the going rate in South Florida.

Screw those guys, they dropped Buell like a bad habit a few years ago and just added them back. I have gone to San Diego for service on mine to avoid them. Check this out, Skip Fordyce (a BadWeb sponsor) will pick your bike up at your home in OC, and take it in for service, no charge for the p/u and delivery. I am trying them next, they also have a Pegesus award and real buell techs.

Thespive, thanks for that tip.

I'm 540 miles before the 10k service. I plan to do most of it myself except for the fork fluid change. You can bet I will NOT be taking my bike to OC HD/Buell.

TPS reset takes five minutes if you know what you are doing, and it doesn't take a lot of equipment either.

Here is Hammer doing mine in the parking lot of TWO at March Badness IV, in full leathers!

mm

Thanks Rich!

Man, I just called the dealership down here in Corpus Christi...they said 65 bucks for a TPS reset. It seems way worth it to just buy the VDST.

+1 on Free. Have and will continue to do them for nothing. VDST was the best item bought for the bike so far. Has helped many on the board here and some others. Dealership is where you buy a bike and thats it.

Oh and no problem there Jon.

TPS reset is FREE at FULL POWER STARTER and ALTERNATOR repair service in Homer Alaska.
Directions available at google maps.
Tip for ya, while doing diagnostic work with KEY ON, pulling out the headlamp fuse will reduce unnecessary amp draw on the BATTERY.
Have much fun.

Ouch, sorry to hear you got hosed - yes, it will work on the '07. My local dealer reset mine for free but I still bought VDST to have the capability - I hate having to rely on the dealer for anything I don't have to. It will read codes too, so even if I had to get them to do a repair on it at least I'll be educated and make sure they don't f me over and make stuff up that wasn't really wrong!!

For those of you wanting a truly free TPS reset tool, try the new ECM-Spy from a German Bueller. All of the details can be found here:
http://www.bike-pix.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2034 0&start=0

The only catch is that you have to make your own cable, but I am making a palm cable for less than $15, and PC cables are costing about $25.

I realize that I am pushing this pretty hard, but it is only because I am pumped up about the project and want to get the word out in the US. I have no affiliation other than needing a TPS reset tool. It is already in use in the UK and Germany, but since there is a big pond between the two of us, it seems like it is not taking off over here. There is a thread going in the KV for those of you who want to know a little more.

if your bike is still under factory warranty then the dealership could run a warranty claim for a running issue due to tps out of spec.
