ok. i saw the popping thread, and figured i would toss this up. I hear the pinging noise very rarely, and was curious what is this. I only hear it when i am tooling around town, but that is the only time i can hear anything really.

harmful?
preventable?

The technical term is detonation. See article here for more info:

http://www.answers.com/topic/engine-knocking

Pinging will sound like someone rapping a piece of metal rapidly with a ball peen hammer and will happen most easily when you accelerate from a stop or low speed. Minor occasional pinging is not a problem. Constant and/or prolonged pinging is.

I've always been told ANY pinging is bad...

Sneth - be careful that you aren't confusing pinging with the typical rattles that the XB engine puts out. Most of the noise you're hearing is probably valvetrain chatter that's 100% normal.

The only time I've ever had my bike ping was on a SUPER hot day in stopped traffic for 30 minutes or more and letting the rpms drop below 1000 on take offs.

no. this is definite metal on metal. yeah the XB engine is quite loud, louder than the exhaust at times.

it's quite like Hugh described. ball hammer on metal. I dont get it often, and i had never heard it on anyone else's bike. On mine, you def have to be riding to hear it.

the best description of the sound of the "pinging" noise is that it sounds like rattling a coffee can full of nickels.

oh and mine does it only when the motor is very hot and I'm getting on it. FYI..... I only use premium fuel.

If you are unsure what pinging sounds like you can induce it by shifting up a couple or three gears too high when climbing a steep hill in town.

The motor will clatter, hammer, and ping like nobodies business.

I don't really recommend doing it too much though.

I've had some bad pinging under 2k for the last couple days of riding, while getting oil at my local dealer lastnight- I fiqured I would ask the service tech while I was there. He runs regular unleaded in his wifes 05 XB12s. I asked if they needed premium, (which is all i was running) and he said that it has to do a lot with how much fuel your gas station moves. He has not had any problems running regular, and me pinging with running just p. from the same spot makes a lot of sence. Fuel over time will break down, and if your station is not moving the gas at a very fast rate may be causing the problem. I'm running rich too....but the pinging is not all the time. It was better on my last trip to montreal.

The bad thing about running premium fuel (which I do as a RULE) is there is still a lot of regular in the line by the time the premium hits the outlet meaning you put about 1/2 a gallon of regular in with the premium lowering the octane. That sux when you are only putting in about 2 1/2 to 3 gallons

There have been several threads on this here over the last couple of years. There is a federally-mandated limit on how much fuel the pump is allowed to mix and IIRC it's not that much, but every little bit hurts.

Obviously the best thing to do is to buy gas from stations with multi-hose pumps (separate hose for each grade) if you have them in your area. If you don't have that option, then avoid topping off your tank with a gallon or two of fuel as the percentage of regular will be higher the less fuel you buy. If you've got the time, you can look for a pump where the last purchase was premium and avoid the mix that way.

It's also worth trying different brands of gas. You may find that a brand (or brands) that work better than others in your bike.

Mine seems to be pinging too, but at different RPM's than what you guys are explaining. I run premium fuel. I notice mine when It is hot, but usually at higher speeds instead of lower. It happens when I give it a fist full of throttle in 3rd, 4th, and mostly 5th. If I back off of it a little, I can't hear it anymore. I would say RPM's are are from 2 to 3k. So is this pinging or some other issue?

I have been able to eliminate the the ping in my Ulysses by installing a TFI (electronic jet) unit.

Setting the accelerator and main jet pots richer than Techlusion's recommended settings has worked so far...

My Uly pings/rattles after sitting in traffic at a long light.
As I take off I hear it unless I raise the RPM's and launch fairly hard.

It happens more often as the temperature rises.

Interesting that your solution worked. Pinging is generally a bad timing issue (i.e. the burn happens to early in the piston's stroke - higher octane burns slower, thus relieveing the ping).

Perhaps your richer settings are allowing the engine to run a bit cooler?

Well, there are several related factors that affect it; timing adjustment is generally the easiest way to eliminate it. Compression ratio, engine temperature, spark plug heat range, fuel mixture, combustion chamber shape/details, fuel octane, and ignition timing are all part of the equation.

That was my thinking, and so far so good. However, pinging on my Uly has been fickle. So this could just be one of those times it doesn't feel like doing it... similar to if I took it to the dealer for the problem; it wouldn't ping.

I do have a "dyno hill" close by and I've run the Uly up the hill several times, without hearing any pinging.

I guess whaty I meant to say is timing is usually the fix, or that you adjust the timing to match the rest of the engine and fuel being used.

I tried retarding the timing, it didn't ping then; but was noticeably down on power and the acceleration was not as crisp. And, the fan came on sooner and did not shut off until it finished its after ig off run. I am assuming the retarded timing caused more heat...

I live in arizona and it has been 110-117 for the last 30 days. my 05 XB9sx has bee "pinging" like mad. I thought I had damaged something. At night when it cools down (to 90) it stops. So this is normal?

Hi - I had(have) the same ping. The cycle is an xb12scg w/ cut air box, stock air filter and ecu and Spec Ops pipe. Pings ONLY at 3-4kRPM and moderate to heavy throttle AND over ~92DegF Ambient Temp.

My first fix was switch gas stations - Mine likes Chevron better than conoco or shell - 91 OCT, of course. This helped noticeably, but not completely.

Next I changed the plugs to the Platinums from Buell, which helped more than the gas, yet I still have some light ping when operating within the above parameters.

A quick trip to the dealer revealed some lameness - "We've only seen pinging on the LARGE displacement HD's." and "You're running premium, right?" and my favorite, "You can't adjust the timing on an XB." - I'm trying to decide if I should copy the page in my service manual that details the timing adjustment procedure and take it down there...

My next attempts will be to try a 'whole' airbox, and check the timing. What else is there?

i had the same experience as Teeps when i attempted retarding the timing a bit to alleviate ping. had an excellent Buell tech reset to stock-spec eventually. retarding the timing using the cam position sensor removes fuel from the curve as well so you're compounding the problem. something to keep in mind.

i've gone to cooler NGK plugs, tried all sorts of high-octane gas, Techron cleanings, lots of settings on the TFi, etc...

bike is running great after all of last seasons work... but on the hot days, i still get ping. at this point, i chalk it up as normal and get some air moving on the beast if i've been stuck in slow or stopped traffic. more RPMs upon launch or a lower gear juicing it up hills has been good training to keep the ping to a minimum as well.

Was your TFI tuned on a dyno?

nope, started with base settings from Kevin when i added the Race ECM and Drummer. been tweaking a tiny bit here and there since then by seat-of-the-pants only.

i did attempt to get it dyno tuned a few years ago but the tuner THOUGHT he knew what he was doing. the Buell system + TFi isn't as quick and easy as a reg IL4 + PCIII. his settings were all over the place, way off from Kevin's recommendations. I went back to Kevins settings then began my own tuning from there.
