What is pinging? I've heard it mentioned here on many occasions. What are its symptoms? Why hasn't buell corrected it if the problem doesn't exist on the 9?

it's when the fuel in the cylinder pre ignites. Mostly due to the spark plug being too hot.. So that it acts like a diesel. It is just a sound mostly heard on ultra low RPM takes off and you then dump into the throttle. Sometimes on a big hill in other gears.

Hot air days, and/or using low octane fuel is a cause.

It's an problem on air cooled high power engines --- the 9 is a good bit less power than a 12. Just like little 883 sporters don;t ping.

Fixing can be done by cooler engine, high octane fuel or ocatne booster, running colder plugs.

Another thing is carbon build up. Increased carbon in your cylinders increases the factory compression and also introduces hot spots that can cause pre-ignition. Harley Davidson sells a fuel additive containing DurAlt, and I've been using pure DurAlt since my air-cooled BMW Boxer days. No problems with pinging!

Hey, i've been having the same pinging issues on my 12R. I don't notice it unless it is very hot and I'm lettin her eat.

I've read in other places that you can mist water into the intake when it is warmed up and running. This is supposed to remove the carbon deposits, kinda like a steam bath. Anybody tried that?

I use the harley fuel treatment and have no pinging issues.
