oh yeah heres another thread! maybe im in the minority, but im just not that excited about a motor change. actually i've been more excited about new okra news then the new motor. i'm sure if a new motor was presented it will be quite the bump up for the buell, but IMHO its going to take away a very large reason i purchased my buell in the first place. i waited a long time to purchase a buell, there was something about the old tubers that just didn't suit me(it wasn't the motor). when the xb line came out i knew they had done what i was looking for, the chassis and motor were the perfect match in my book. other v-twins just don't run the same as the HD derived v's that i love so much! O.K. i've made peace with it now show me the new friggin motor!(prefferably powder coated okra green)

Ustorque,
+10 on that, I myself always was interested in the Buells for many years, always riding HArleys and seeing them in the show rooms, But for some reason when I saw that Firebolt in 2003 I was well I had to have one, and when in 04 they brought the 1200 I had to get one .. Have 4 in the shop now and hate to part with any of them....
Leave it alone Eric....
I wd. like to see a 1300/1350 bore ( say 110 RWHP, 100 lbs.RWTorque I ask why wd. that be hard to do?????

Also Just a Better ECM unit one which auto tunes better for changes something like the New Thundermax systems...

Now is this asking for much... I Don`t think Soooooooooooooooooooooooo.....!!!!!!
53 years young.
BTW... Did someone say WaterCooled I sure hope not..Won`t get my Vote or LOOK...!Period

It seems the majority wants a new drivetrain though so I have a stong feeling you will be seeing one at least in the Firebolt setting tomorrow.

For the most part I agree. If you look at the positive reviews the xb line has received over the years it normally comes back to one thing. Street-ability. The engine and chassis just flat out work well together. Its just a very street-able motorcycle(all xb forms). I would hate to see that change. A new motor would be cool but hopefully not at the expense of it's street manners.

Personally I think the Tuono is a good example of what Buell shouldn't do. It's a ball to ride but I find it likes to always be ridden hard(and I always wanted to ride it hard everytime I rode one). The superduke is another from the reviews I've read. I think there is a balance that can be achieved between excellent street manners and performance. The xbs may be a little down on power but I don't necessarily see that as a bad thing. It's a really fun bike to ride.

A new engine wouldn't kill it's appeal for me but it would have to be done in a way as to keep it's fun factor. Fun factor for me isn't 150 at the rear wheel. I think whatever Erik has in store will be good though and I don't think there will be anything to worry about.

A Buell w/o a Harley based engine would most likely not ever be in my garage. Like many here I lusted after a Buell long before I finally bought one, and the engine was a huge reason in buying my '07 9R (now discontinued) instead of other bikes. This bike has personality, sadly lacking in most bikes made today.

If Buell does in fact debut a water cooled "modern" engine tomorrow I do hope that they continue with the Sportster based bikes as well. Ducati does a great job at keeping the "old" air-cooled L's along w/the constantly reconfigured water cooled L's and have plenty of buyers for both.

I see Buell being the American Bimota- great chassis with sourced engines. Nothing wrong w/that. Just keep the "traditional" Buell engines....I only like Ducati based Bimotas by the way.

I would be willing to bet there will still be air cooled XBs. I think Buell is really trying to expand their line to bring in people from all demographics. Having all the bikes they currently have plus a Wc world beater should cover just about every rider out there.

New motor will probably equal valve adjustments and cooling system maintenance. I can see it now, all the Buellers sitting around pining for the simpler times.

I like my HD lump of a motor.

I never liked Buells too much;
-Its American its going to explode on me
-Associated with Harley!?!?!
-It may sound like a Harley too!
-The Rs are very much unattractive

But a friend's friend came over one day and let me ride his XB9R, luckily this happened right as I was preparing to buy a Moto Guzzi Nero Corsa, and by the next weekend I had myself a new 2004 XB12R.

All my fears about owning a Buell disappeared, they no longer mattered.
It was the most fun I have ever had on two wheels, I had a grin on my face that entire week (and continues to this day) and had completely forgotten about the Guzzi.

I do adore my current Buell, its just jolly good fun. And it is very rare that I want more power from it...
BUT,
The continual pinging during hot days is something that I would gladly give up; Be it exiting a turn just to find out I can not accelerate out of it because of ping, or just being in traffic and have it get all pissy.

This is not to say that I wont do everything possible to try and keep my XB12R; because high performance engines are typically not this much fun.
Keep my current one for cooler days, and the new one for hot days.

The single biggest stumbling block MOST sport bike riders have (NOT the people here, mind you) is that antique lump of aluminum in the bike. Everything "State of the Art" until you get to that undersquare, push-rod boat anchor suspended between the wheels.

Sure it has its charms, and everyone here appreciates it. BUT the vast majority of sport bike riders out there will avoid it like the plague because it IS a Harley motor... and Harley hasn't had a "high performance" image since before I could learn to walk. Sorry, but that's just the way it is.

There are also plenty of sport bike riders who don't like the "vibe" they get when they wander into a Harley showroom either. That's the next stumbling block they need to get around. They'll always feel welcome wandering into an Italian, Japanese or German brand dealership... but ride up on the latest sport machinery to a Harley dealership? Even if it's not the dealer employees causing the "negative vibe" it'll still be there from the other customers.

I may or may not be moved to trade in my XB12Ss pending tomorrow's announcement. Mostly because I've pretty much gotten it where I want it to be in terms of customization (and I'd have to start all over again with a new bike).

But if the new bike has a stainless steel exhaust system (from exhaust ports to tip of the muffler) the choice will almost be made for me. Unless, of course, Buell is also announcing stainless steel replacement mufflers for their existing bikes...

I am so glad that I am not the only who thinks that would be a great idea
I have been longing for a stainless steel stock muffler, almost tempted to get someone to fabricate one for me}

what is Pinging? I've heard it mentioned here on many occasions. What are its symptoms? Why hasn't buell corrected it if the problem doesn't exist on the 9?

beside the fact that my post was about the fact that i love my motor, picture this....i myself had problems purchasing my XB because of lack of enthusiasm on the dealers part to even try to sell buells and the service at my dealer is downright terrible! now throw a non HD motor into the buell and expect them to try to sell them, oh this i've got to see.

sometimes they even make that hard! but on the same not if the old v was phased out i would have to wonder how user friendly the new rotax would be for us all to work on. where all of us with a set of tools and a little common sense(and help from the bad web)can render the dealer almost obsolete right now do you think we could with a new state of the art rotax or would we be at their mercy once again to maintain and repair them for us.

by the way we've yet to talk about the fracture that would occur on the BADWEB! we'd need two different boards XB-07BOARD and the XBROTAXBOARD man that ain't cool.

If I don't need the whole damned rollaway full of tools to work on it ( SAE, Torx and metric ) then it will be a vast improvement. An extra 60 HP won't hurt my feelings either.
