Another question for XB12 owners: noticed that the throttle is a little slow to return to idle when the engine is warm. Doesn't fall right off like an inline does. I think I remember reading something once that this is a characteristic of the 12s to avoid rear wheel spin when using the engine compression to brake. Is this corrrect? My XB9Sx seemed to be quicker to return to idle than my 12. Comments/other experiences? | ||

My 12r is a "little" slow to return.It's the LACK of engine braking.Inline fours have gobs MORE engine braking than our undersquare V-twins.In order just to keep this poorly balanced twin running it needs BIG flywheels and upon decelleration the stored energy in them (rotational inertia) keeps on spinning.Now an oversquare I-4 on the otherhand has a very light flywheel because of those 4 little pistons balance very well.Spin an I-4 up to redline in first gear and abruptly CHOP the throttle and watch out cuz that puppy is coming DOWN! That's why it's very important to do slipper clutches on I-4 bikes.My education on this subject was from Kevin Cameron's "TDC" column in "Cycleworld". | ||

Oh yeah,i forgot to mention my 996 Ducati.It has an Oversquare V-twin and at 90 included degrees (compared to Buells'45 degrees) is perfectly balanced and doesn't need big flywheels.It is very Throttle responsive and when chopped comes right the "F" down.Hope that helps. | ||

A TPS reset can help if it is "hanging" up to long. | ||

If this is consistent behavior, the engine may have an intake leak. | ||

Mine used to do that, but it doesn't do it anymore after I lowered the idling. Thanks for whoever posted that first observation! Paul |
