Just got my 04 XB12S (850miles) and noticed the fan stays on high once the engine reaches operating temp. My XB9Sx never did this (only when shut off and the odd time in heavy traffic). The 12 goes through the normal sequence when shut off (high operation then low) but the high operation going down the road??? I know synthetic oil and a right side scoop helps but have other list members experienced this continual operation with an 04? Just want to make sure nothing is wrong. Not really that hot out - only about 80degrees.

I have an '07 XB12Ss and my fan operates the same way. The past few mornings have been about 60 deg or so, and after 10 minutes that sucker is on until a few minutes after I shut the bike off. I sure hope it's normal.

I was originally looking to get an XB9X. Along the way I read many posts here talking about the differences between the 9 and the 12. I was nervous cause I thought that maybe the 12 was going to be too much power... any way, many on here posted that the fan on the 12 runs way more often than on the 9.

My personal experience has also shown that after I installed an Original Drummer, the fan usage dropped dramatically.

Weird that the drummer would make a difference? I guess easier on the engine 'cause it is breathing better. Going to try the syn3 today.

yup once the fan turns on while riding it will not turn off at all unless you shut the bike off for a few minutes.
I rode for 20 miles going 40+ with light rain and 70deg temperatures and the fan was on the entire time

when i first got my 12r the fan would come on quite frequently, even on 60deg days. I have recently done my 1000k service with mobile 15w40 and have noticed that it rarely comes on(95deg here in SC) except as usual when I cut it off.

I have a '04 12S and it doesn't do what you're describing. It will, however, come on after extended riding when I stop at a light. I'm running synthetic oil and the stock scoop, 17,000mi. I'd say if its not going into skip-fire mode then probably no problem. Can get annoying tho.

It's odd that somebody would mention that after they replaced the exhaust their fan seemed to run less.... Never gave it any thought. My fan runs less after I installed a drummer. Stands to reason. Freer flowing exhaust= less heat trapped inside the engine. I live in the scorching desert (Needles, Ca.) and have some reservations about riding my XB12S on days that exceed 110 degrees...... Anybody have any thoughts or experience with this? I am using H-D Syn 3.

This is funny, we Ulysses riders have been commenting on the fan operation for over a year.

Yes, the fan runs when a "reasonable person" would think it otherwise.

The fan on my Ulysses will run every time under these conditions: 45 mph, along the coast with ambient temperature below 70F., riding at the legal speed limit on the freeway.

Yes, a reasonable person would surly ask why? Why does the fan need to run under these conditions?
The answer; it just does.

"It is normal with the OEM design for the fan to not turn off once it comes on. It turns on at 428F, off when it gets down to 356F. But once it comes on, the bike in cruise will generally only drop into the 370s in normal ambient temps, and that won't turn the fan off. The RSS will pull it down far enough to turn the fan off".

Got this tidbit of info from Al @American Sport Bike so good to know things are normal. Local dealer tech confirmed the same information.

Bent,

Nobody's mentioned it yet, but the engine in your XB12S at 850 miles is just starting to get broken in. As it gets some miles on it, you should see the fan operate somewhat less. Most people say changing to synthetic will help too, but don't do it too soon. I think most people here would agree don't change to synth before the 1000 mile service and waiting 'til 2500 miles or even 5000 (which is what I'm doing) isn't a bad idea.

I just picked up and 05 12S and have yet to have the fan come on while the key is on. As soon as I shut the key off it runs on high, then low, then off. I don't end up in traffic much but last weekend I feel like it should have come on a few time. Just seems odd to me that on a big air cooled bike that it hasn't come on yet while riding/sitting. I will investigate a little to make sure I don't blowerup.

Thanks,
Chris
