Hey Everybody!

I’ve been lurking around here for some time now, but have yet to post much. This site has been invaluable to me in the relatively short amount of time I have owned my 2004 XB12S. I recently purchased a race kit (muffler, air filter, and ECM…and no, not the one that just went for over $1500) from a fellow BadWebber (thanks nutsnbolt!), and that brings me to the purpose of this post.

After the kit arrived, I purchased a service manual from Al at American Sportbike, along with a few other odds-and-ends. I successfully removed my stock muffler, servo cable, and air filter, then installed the race muffler and air filter. I can’t believe that stealerships want about $300 to do that…what a crock! Anyway, at this point in time I am planning to ride my bike to the dealer, perform the parking lot ECM swap, and have them do the TPS reset. I did take the bike for a 10 minute test ride just to make sure I installed everything properly. I’m pretty sure it’s running lean, but the bike actually ran ok with the stock ECM, with the exception that the check engine light came on. Luckily, one of the odds-and-ends I got from Al was a trouble code dongle. Plugged it in, and it showed a trouble code of 21, the interactive exhaust servo. I would assume that the lack of servo cable would cause the feedback circuit to throw the code. And now to my questions...

Is 60 miles (the distance to my closest dealer) too far to ride with the stock ECM?

Will the race ECM cure, or ignore, the trouble code thrown by the exhaust servo?

Once I get the race ECM on and the TPS reset, should I disconnect and remove the servo?

Sorry for the long post! Any help would be much appreciated

I don't believe 60 miles is too far, but YMMV.

The race ECM doesn't even look for the exhaust servo so yes it'll ignore it.

Once you get the race ECM in and the TPS reset, disconnect and remove the servo. It's just dead weight at that point anyway.

Soon as the race ECM is in place the trouble light will go away. 60 miles isn't all that bad,just don't rev high in the RPM's and take it light and you'll be just fine. It funny you have a code if your servo is still plugged in to the stock ECM.

Thanks for the advice guys!!! I can't wait to get the TPS reset all squared away. It's finally gonna sound like an american v-twin should

After they reset the TPS. Take the bike out on the HWY at a constant speed at about 3500rpm's for 5 miles or so. That way it learns the change.
