I'm looking into buying the VDSTS from American Sportbike, but I was curious about some things Al mentioned via email, and thought I'd ask about them here (Al's a busy guy, and I've asked him enough noob questions lately!).

Is anyone running the Palm OS version of the VDSTS? Had any problems with it? Al said if I go the PDA route instead of a laptop, to get the Windows Mobile version instead. The PDA I can afford right now is Palm OS only, so this kinda' worries me.

Also, what's the difference between the PDA version and the laptop version? Al said the laptop version is more "advanced", but didn't mention how. I could buy the laptop version and install it on my wife's machine, but I'd rather not have to "borrow" her equipment whenever I want to tinker.

Thanks in advance for any info!

I have only used a (borrowed) VDSTS system on a computer. Both a desk top (my own) and laptop (borrowed from work.)

The owner of the VDSTS says he was never able to get it to work on his Palm (I don't know which Palm or ver os.)

And, my own experience with using the VDSTS has proven to be quirky and erratic. But I was always able to get it to work.

Technoresearch uses a proprietary hardware solution to prevent piracy of their software. And, as I understand, it's the hardware that makes the difference between Palm and computer, as well as the software.

The hardware dongle can be used for both your laptop and PDA. They don't require two separate dongles. You just need to buy a 9-pin serial adapter for your PDA. The PDA softare is downloadable from the Technoresearch web site.

I have a Windows CE PDA (IPAQ) and successfully used it to do routine bike work on my Firebolt (check diagnostic codes, idle, TPS reset). Works fine for me. I've seen lots of old IPAQs in the local pawn shops that sell for $30-$75 that would be good for this application.

Sorry, no experience with Palm OS usability.
