I spent another day on my 2004 Buell xb12s Coming off various Japanese sport bikes (mostly Honda's), and I would like to tip my hat to Eric Buell and crew for making a bike that gives anybody Balls of steel when hitting the twisty stuff! I have never wanted to push a bike faster harder and lower into turns than I do my Buell! I Never feel as if it will let me down, she grits her teeth and grunts begging for me to go harder and faster, like my ex used to, but that's a different story! Shocks the sh8 out of me how it feels SO SOLID! I find myself laying her down deep on 90deg turns at intersections and motoring HARD right after the apex and she never runs wide or acts even the slightest bit unpredictable on exit... I'm not sure if it is the, new to me "Athletic" riding position, or the GP racing geometry but, the Buell XB12s lightning is A Pure unadulterated Confidence inspiring road carving masterpiece!

Now if they could just get it to stay cool, start and not stall, return to idle when running hot like it does when at normal temp give 'er a little more gear, and it will be PERFECT in Every way!

Added a higher redline and I agree 100%.

The Buell seems to handle great, but it's the only street bike I've ridden so I have nothing to compare it to. I did get smoked by 2 Jap bikes today (06 GSX-R750 and 03 R1), but they have about 4 years experience each and I only have about 3,000 miles worth.

Oh and your ex sounds like fun, but I'm sure there's a reason she's your ex! :P

If not note where you are and start "tinkering" you may be even more amazed.. once mine was dialed in right for my weight riding position and distrabution OMG its like heaven.. oh yeah and the new qualifiers helped tremedously too...

1. Stay cool.
Not going to happen. This is an air cooled motor.

2. Start and not stall.
If it doesn't do this, it isn't running properly. Most likely the Throttle Position Sensor, TPS, needs to be reset. $35 at your Buell Friendly HD dealer.

3. Return to idle when hot.
It should to this every time too.
After you have the TPS reset, get the bike hot, then adjust the idle as per the shop manual.

You do have the shop manual, right?

As far as getting more gear, you have to go to a chain conversion for that.

Lot's of brothers have joined the Chain Gang. Saintly, a Bad Webber makes a very economical and popular kit that costs little more than a new belt.

Lots of info on this subject, and many others, in the Knowledge Vault on this site. Use the "Google BadWeb" function on the top of this page to find it.

$35 for a TPS reset? You must have a really Buell friendly HD dealer. My local shop charged me almost $100 and I fought it tooth and nail, lost, and have never been back.

Anyone living near me, I will do them for free & show YOU how to do them.

TPS should be free from all dealers! IMO

I purchased it used and it seems to be set up fairly well for my weight, I've just been contemplating dialing out a little compression damping as it is a little jarring over rough patches of asphalt

It only stalls on a cold start, I assumed it was due to the race kit installed on the bike, not sure if the original owner had a TPS reset. I'll look into that though.

I had a return-to-idle problem too. I readjusted the idle to around 1050 rpm, and that corrected the problem. Also, have the TPS reset.

When Hot that is just about exactly where she Idles about a needle thickness above 1k... it's really annoying! coming up to lights and she is pulling my forward instead of slowing me down...

Talked to Harley today about the problem and he said it's a common TPS symptom along with every other I mentioned to him, cold start sputtering and stalling, surging at steady speeds, and slow return to Idle when Hot... He said that I don't even have to bring it in to do it, he could walk me through it over the phone if I have a digital tachometer and it wouldn't cost me a cent... I thought they had to hook it up to a notebook computer or something but, I guess not...I'll probably just bring it in to get done though... seems like it might be more trouble than it is worth although the Know how would come in really handy.

Update: I just looked through the manual procedure and maybe he was saying "digital tech" short for Technician and I heard "Tach" short for Tachometer... Duh... I'm a New Yorker, still trying to get used to the North Carolina accent... One can easily see how "Tech" and "Tach" could be confused, especially knowing those two very different accents!
