I want to get one of these for my 05 xb12. I want to leave the stock ecm with no re-program for now, no airbox mod or anything for now. Which one of these runs the best with a stock set-up? Im concerned if either of these will make the bike run lean which is not so good for engine longevity.

you opened up a can o worms here.

Stock. i would reccomend special ops. Exhaust servo is left intact and the stock FI can adapt.

Race ECM i would reccomend the drummer.


but you will find a million opinions on this.

I'm trying to make the same decision right now as well. I've heard the Drummer in person and it sounds amazing. I haven't heard the Spec. Ops. From what I've read the Spec. Ops pipe makes more power in the mid range area, but the Drummer makes even power throughout. I know a couple guys that run Drummers with the stock ECM and say they've had no problems and their bikes run great. From what I can tell from riding with them, they're right.

I think the finish work on the Drummer is nicer, but the price on the Spec. Ops is more appealing. Also, I happen to know that Drummer is out of stock right now, so if you want one you will have to send your's in to have it modified and go without until you get it back.

I am also going to replace the stock pipe with a drummer. but i was thinking of using the drummer ss from odie. the dealer is going to do the work under buells 1 time corrosion policy. so i hope they take the time to reset the tps and reprogram the ecm.

I have a drummer with stock - I wasn't sure at first - I love the sound but thought it lacked a bit compared to the stock pipe but, when you ride it hard - it stays fast & hard!

Im used to it now & I dont think I can go back to stock - I love the grunt too much - once I get beyond 3000 rpms - it just rocks. Still not sure whether the race ecm & K&N will make better power for the extra money.
I've heard mixed reviews on the race ecm vs stock with Drummer & Kevin himself endorses the stock.

I previously had a Jardine slip-on with stock everything else. I then went to the race ecm, American Sport Bike open air box, and K&N filter. Noticed a big difference in power, especially in the upper rpm range where the Jardein makes it's power (4000+ rpm). Now I have the same setup but with a standard Drummer and this thing rocks! Huge difference in lower and midrange, very slight loss in upper rpm rush (5500-6500) but the average power is way up compared to the Jardine, and it sounds sooo much nicer. Deeper with much less popping.

Personally I like the more polished finish of the Drummer compared to the OPS, I get compliments all the time on the muffler (the machined billet end cap is gorgeous!).

+1 on the recommendation for a Drummer

My pipe is leaving today on its Journey to Connecticut, so I can't give you any viewpoints from an owner of one just yet.
I can tell you that if owning this pipe is only 1/8 as pleasing as talking with Kevin; It will have been worth it.

for the record;
I will be running this pipe with the stock ECM and no major intake mods on Kevin's recommendation.

I am also looking at these two for when I get my xb. The only thing I'm worried about is I have tried couple xb's with the race exhaust on and they felt like they lacked in the bottom compare to the stock ones so I'm scared the it will be the same with the drummer or spec ops.

i have the econodrummer on a stock xb12r and it absolutely rocks, and i have heard great things about the special ops "odie" pipe also. either way, you will love the sound difference over the "sewing machine" stock pipe sound
