How much oil does it take to change the oil level on the dipstick from 1) the add to full line 2) from say halfway in the add area to halfway in the OK area. Mine seems to be drinking a hell of a lot. ie.3/4 of a Quart (750ml) per 1000km. | ||

I am guessing but I think it might be a 1/2 quart between the low level and the high level mark. I remember also reading that a lot of people were complaining of oil consumption and one reason is that people were trying to keep the oil level right at the full mark. I think its suppose to be right in the middle of the high and low, (while Hot). I think because its a dry sump system you will get different oil levels every time you shut off your bike so as long as it never drops below the low mark you should be good. | ||

Mine keeps falling below the low mark every week, into the add area.Then I keep topping it up little by little until its between the low and high mark. I want to know how much this is so I can simplify the procedure. | ||

I find this strange as my 2004 S uses no oil. I ride it as hard at times as the next person, but have never had an issue with the oil being low. | ||

Most people that are having the oil consumption issue are not following the book on what oil to use and when. I know I tried it my way with my first Buell.I found out the hard way when my 20-50W completely disappeared in 1000 miles in the summer heat. I went to the recommendations in the Buell book and oil consumption became a non issue. And my engine is quieter than a lot of other Buells I have ridden with. When mine gets to the low mark I add 1/2 of a pint and let it ride. My City-X liked to be at the bottom of the stick, I would fill it and it would go away but when it was at the low mark it seemed to never go away once I started running the right weight of oil for the ambient temperatures. | ||

Im using SYN 3, dont know what the previous owner was using but the first oil change did not look pretty, black goo! I got the bike with 3000km on it and Ive added another 3000km in a month, the first 1000km being done on the black goo. | ||

The oil consumption on mine follows previous air cooled engine experience. The oil consumption tends to increase during the later part of the oil's life as the oil breaks down. The oil level also tends to drop as the engine is pushed hard. This is due to increased heat and breakdown (which happens to ALL oils regardless of quality) as well as some blowby due to higher temperatures and the looser tolerances of air-cooled engines. Hotter oil will also have higher levels of vaporization. This vapor, unless you are using a catch can, will be sucked back into the engine and burned. If you ride moderately, the oil consumption is decreased. If you ride aggressively, the oil consumption is increased. Have you checked inside your airbox? Overfilling results in puddles in your airbox. I usually check mine after a ride. If it's at a quarter up the "ok" part of the stick, I don't add. I only add once it's dropped below the "add" line. Mine has never been all the way to the top. I never use more than a third of a quart per 2,500 miles. | ||

I have 20k miles on 2005 S. Only once did I have to add oil. I commute daily about 60 miles (both ways). I think the one time I had to add oil was when I was doing a road trip with alot of miles. My guess is the short commuter trips dont break down the oil, but once the engine is running for two hours solid oil is starting to break down much quicker. | ||

my 04XB12S does not consume any oil at all. The best way to check your oil is of course on the sidestand after 5 minutes of warmup. don't check it right away as stated above with the dry sump system it will give false readings right after it's running. So - warm up for 5 minutes. Let it sit for about 2 and check it. |
