Last week changed oil and accidentally used 5W50 instead of the 15W50 I normally use. Think this OK until next oil change? I mean, the lower number is only the cold viscosity anyway, the hot temp viscosity should be the same. |

Should be fine. |

I've got 5W40 Rotella in my Ulysses. Makes the parts slippery, that's all that matters. |

Here is some info on why you shouldn't be using 5w50, 15w50 0r 5w40. The bike will run fine but you might get a build up of burnt polymers which will make the rings stick. http://www.howstuffworks.com/framed.htm?parent=que stion164.htm&url=http://www.micapeak.com/info/oile d.html The manual recommends: multi grade 10w40 below 40 degrees f 20w50 above 40 degrees f regular heavy duty sae 50 above 60 degrees f extra heavy duty sae 60 above 80 degrees |

I ran castrol syntec 5w50 for an oil change or two. Thin stuff to be sure, and my engine drank it like there was no tomorrow. Syntec 20w50? I have consumed about 1/3 of a quart in 2000 miles. Syntec 5w50? I was consuming 1/3 of a quart in about 400 miles at times (a dangerous state of affairs). |

Because I have no manual...what's the best oil to use for summer riding in an XB9? I want to change oil next week. |

Harley Screaming Eagle Full Synthetic (great but expensive) Mobil 1 VTwin (20w50) (great but expensive) Valvoline full synthetic 20w50 (great and cheaper but hard to find) Castrol Syntec 20w50 full synthetic (great and easy to find... wal-mart $5 per quart) Mobil 1 15w50 (good and easy to find, but better reserved for the winter) The Amsoil / Royal Purple / Motul etc are good oils as well (any 20w50 full synthetic) but aren't magic. All the 20w50 non synthetics are "barely adequete" for the suggested 3500 mile oil change. All the 20w50 full synthetics are more then adequete for the suggested 3500 mile oil change. IMHO |

Reepicheep. I use to use about the same amount of oil as you do until i went with the open air box and ran my breather tubes to a catch can. The vent tubes pull oil out when the engine is run at upper RPM. Now at 14,000 plus miles i hardly use any.IMO. |

2006 XB12Scg 22,000 miles. Used Castrol Syntec 5W-50 since 1000 mile service. Used Bosch 3311 oil filter since first oil change. The XB is used as a daily commuter, 100 miles daily. Oil consumption has stabilized to 1/2 pint/2000 miles. I am not sure if Castrol uses polymers in their Syntec line or they are able to maintain viscosity with another method. I tore down the top end of a Harley Shovelhead which had been using Syntec 5W-50 and I saw no evidence of ring sticking caused by polymer deposits, I saw no evidence of any sludge or deposits anywhere, the internals were immaculate! Castrol Syntec is supposed to endure temperatures up to 400 degrees, I have never seen the oil temp go over 220 degrees on my XB. |
