I just spoiled the plans of two pair of bike thieves tonight. It was a rider driver tag team. They hanging out in a driveway of a house I know to be vacant. I called the police who questioned them. Their story did not line up. Police could not take them in since they did not commit the act, but they are ID so they won't look for a opportunity in my area at least for a while, maybe they will come to your part of the woods. I only saw the rider, not his buddy in the car. They are in a white lincon (sp?) town car. They showed up at about 8pm. Here what I recall about the rider: 6ft - 6'4" appears over 35 white male but with a dark tan skinny, lanky. curly dark black / brown hair My bike has a zena disc alarm and my own electronic system. They must have some hardware or crow bars I guess as it is visible from the street. Hope this helps someone. |

From what you described, I'll bet they were burglers, not bike thieves. Bikes are almost always stolen by trucking them away rather than attempting to hot wire them (quicker and easier). What led you to believe they were after bikes? |

I have a silent alarm on my bike they tripped. But I see your point, they could have just been scoping the area and saw my bike as a possible bonus. |

I'm sure they were up to no good, but professional bike theft rings just pick them up and truck them away. Sport bikes are often nicked by a couple of big guys and a panel van. Harleys are usually taken with trailers or a box van with a lift gate. Did the cops search the car? They can hassle them for having burglery tools if they find crowbars, sledge hammers, etc in the car they are staking out a neighborhood with. The charge wouldn't stick, but they could sweat them if they were so inclined. It pays to be observant. |

I have to say that the cops did a good job in giving them grief. I did not catch all the details but the conversation went on for about 25 mins. The car driver pulls away while the other dude was being questioned and quickly stopped down the road and question for another 30 mins. I mentioned that I have a home brew security system that includes a silent alarm. I am finding the silent alarm is more valuable. Before the the regular alarm it would go off and before you can get an look the dudes are gone. With the silent alarm you can have a chance to see patterns (like it being tripped at night), gather info, snap a picture of the perps in action, and devise a plan to deter or capture with assistance of police. |

Same concept, but this is built for the task at hand: http://www.buy.com/retail/Product.asp?sku=20223391 1&SearchEngine=NexTag&SearchTerm=202233911&Type=PE &Category=Electronics&Gad=0&dcaid=15894 Also have some IR triggers around the bike so my house lights flash when some gets too close to the bike ( about $30 ).
