Any idea how long this would take a tech to repair. I have an oil leak at the back of the rear cylinder. It`s got 33,000kms on it and unfortunately it`s off of warranty. And no I`m not allowed to wait for the new model to come out and trade it in ! Would it be ok to keep riding if I keep a close eye on the oil level, my dealer can`t get to it for at least a month!

Is it a rocker box gasket or a head gasket leaking? The rocker box is the very top of the engine. The head gasket will be below where your exhaust comes out of the head where the head meets the cylinder.

If it is just a rocker box, about 2.5 hrs (because of engine rotation). A head gasket will probably be 3-3.5 hours. I can look up the book times for you as well.

It's a pretty major job to get at the rockers, heads and motor in generally for service.

If its a rocker box gasket you can change it in the frame just taking off the air filter base

Its more then likely just your rocker box. You probably need to make time, they tend to go from annoying (for a while) to dangerous (lots of oil flowing everywhere) fairly suddenly.

Not sure on an XB, if you can really get at the thing without rotating the engine (which is a surprise to me, but I have no reason to doubt Thomas), that makes it even easier.

On a tuber anyway, if you went into the job expecting it to be a big deal, a few hours later you thought "that was a lot of parts, but the job was not that bad". If you went into it expecting it to be a really easy job, a few hours later you were thinking "what a pain that was". At least that was my experience.

Rotate engine down takes about 30 or 45 minutes.
Swapping out all the gaskets, rocker, head, and base, takes about an hour and a half.
Rotating engine back up takes another 30 or 45 minutes.
This is if you have all the tools on hand that you need.
The job took a total of about 4 hours, smoke breaks, talking, and stuff counted in.
It's a pretty easy job, only time consuming.
Plus I always have the help of New12r, and the use of the Buell Barn when I need to work on the bike.

Well apparantly it`s a base gasket, I guess that`s why I`m not gonna do this myself .I know a little for basic maintenance ,but this is over my head!
I was told that since everything has to come off the top of the engine to access ,that I may as well get a top end gasket set and do both cylinders. This seems logical but sounds expensive. But with my luck ,I`ll do the one cylinder and a week later the other one will fail!

If I'm not mistaken the top end gasket set includes it all for both cylinders.
It's a time consuming job, but ain't that hard to do, if, you have the tools.
These engines are really simple to work on, with a service manual of course.

I just caught that Glitch... did you need to replace the rockerbox, head and base gasket on your 9sx? How many miles was that at... 50k? Did the head and base gaskets really fail?

XB9 motors... 4.5 hours maintenance every 50k miles... regardless if they need it or not : )

My rear base gasket was leaking too.

I've been told it is from running it hard before fully warmed up, which I have done.

Just letting you know so you are more careful with warmup in the future, if that is in fact what caused your gasket leak.

Wasn't mine Reep, just helpin' out at the Buell Barn. We were doing the base gasket, and decided the best plan was to do all the gaskets since we were "in there" already.
Done two 12's and a Blast, gets easier each time.
I've got 52,000 miles and have noticed my base gasket weeps, but not enough for me to worry with right now. If it gets more than just weeping, then I'll dig into it. If not, I'll do it this winter.
