Has anyone put a shift light on their XB? When I'm pulling out to pass I don't want to be watching the tach. I want to be watching the road and avoiding the limiter. |

I don't see a need for a shift light, personally. You can short shift if you want or if you wait too long the rev limiter will let you know it's time to shift. Plus, you can judge RPM by the sound of the engine. What I did think about installing was a gear indicator. I tend to forget what gear I'm in. I've had this bad habit since I learned to ride in the dirt. |

Learn to feel it. You should be able to feel/know when it runs out of gas, shift just before it does. |

hit the limiter, no big deal other then the loss of power. You will learn to feel it, then shift before or short shift thats the best thing about these engines ! |

I've driven cars with shift lights. Rather than watching the tach, you'll be watching the shift light, waiting to see it come on. |

I disagree about the shift light, I think its a good idea if you want to do it. You will have to get the small light from auto meter, thats the cheap part. Also you will need the rpm sensor witch is the expensive part. If I had the extra cash I would do it. I think American Sport Bike has all the stuff you will need for this. |

The whole point of a shift light is to keep your attention on the road. The need for one of these is purely situational. If you're riding the slab, save your money. My riding is on twisty two lane roads with moderate to high levels of traffic. When I get a chance to pass, I want to be watching the road. Not a tach. And I don't want to hit the rev limiter either. A shift light set up properly (in your peripheral vision) can eliminate both of these situations. It's also machine dependent. I have absolutely no need for a shift light on my Ducati. It's a long way to 10,500 rpm. With the the low rev ceiling of the Buell, I'm hitting it way too often. |

I have one that came as part of my shifter package. It is kind of nice to have the light flash at you in your perifferal vision so you don't have to look down at the tach. http://www.translogicuk.com/ Built my triptronic shifter system and they make top notch stuff, but they charge top notch prices for it too. A lot of their stuff is aviation sourced, like the high speed linear actuator used for the shifters instead of the usual low torque, but far cheaper, solenoids used by other manufacturers of similar systems. I can attest to their LED shift lights being visible in bright daylight too. |

I recently purchased the Raptor Performance shift light and installed it on my S3. It has helped me improve my consistency at the dragstrip (now if it could only help me with redlights ) and improve my best e.t. to a 11.66. I have only had it come on twice on the street as I usually ride at a stealthier rpm! But once was in a group ride and it was nice to keep looking at the bikes ahead of me and just see the light in my peripheral vision. So for those that like the idea, you won't be disappointed! It is not made specifically for motorcycles so you will have to seal it if you are going to have it out in the weather. though it does come with a clear cover for the leds. As lonexb mentioned it is a great value, easy 3 wire hookup right to the tach, and fast friendly service too!

IIRC around one hundred dollars. vs. the auto meter set up. that will run around $250-$300. plus you need to get the "pills" to set the rpm.as well as hide the brain of the unit some where. brian |

I have a raptor in my mustang and love it. I'd like to have one on my buell, but i'm not sure i'd be able to see it. Does anyone with an xb9s have one and where did you put it? Hitting the rev limiter is not a good indication to shift, it can't be good for the motor to do it often. |
