I agree with the looks. When it came out I was disgusted and hated it. Now it looks better to me, but still nowhere near as sexy as the 998 or the 1098. There's a reason Terblanche didn't design the 1098.

Nice bikes, NICE rear wheel steering.

I'm still REAL happy with my XB, thanks.

I rode the new 07 multistrada "S" has the same engine and shocks/forks similar if not the same frame and seating, and only a few pounds heavier. fun, but not as fun as an XB. IMHO its not a motard. Too heavy. Buy a real motard. Husky 510 SMR comes to mind.

According to Claudio Domenicali the Hypermotard was not intended to be a 'motard'. It was designed with motard styling. Shaving 20 kilo's of weight off the Multistrada chassis allows the Hypermotard to behave like a motard, but remains a somewhat more practical bike with a wider use \ appeal than a 'real' motard.

Just going back to the 999's for a moment.
There are now a great number of people that rate the 999's as one of the best, if not the best, sports bikes ever built.

I've never ridden one, but those that have, and have ridden the 916 genre too, don't have a bad word to say about the 999. Interestingly, they almost always praise the heck out of the 999's. Isn't it funny how appearances alone can put people off owning one, and force a motorcycles demise for something 'allegedly' more stylish. Perhaps the 999's might have become 1099cc if it were not for the need of a replacement in the form of the 1098.

Frankly, I find the 999 a much bolder design than the 1098. That's not to say I don't like the 1098. Nor is it a criticism. The 1098 does need to grow on me a little though, which they no doubt will when I start seeing them out and about prowling the back roads.

If the 916 genre had never been, I'm sure the 999's would be lauded as the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Yeah and,now you'll tell us how you're toasting that sliced bread in your innovative newly designed toaster oven.

And while i do not dislike the 999,those goofy "wings" on the side were just that, "goofy".The 1098 is DEFINATELY a better bike.I hope that with BST wheels, ceramic rotors, head and 1036ccs' will allow my 996 to approach the performance NUMBERS of the 999/1098

If I had those guys skill it would be a great bike to ride not to look at in my opinion, and I don't have their skill so the machine actually loks a little aukward I guess in the turns

$11,500 seems a bit pricey for a 95HP bike that only does 125mph..and chain driven...what were they thinking?

Neat looking bike. It would look cool in my garage next to my XB, but it would not replace my XB.

another observation...

Ducati makes some beautiful bikes...why can't they figure out how to make decent looking brake fluid reservoirs? They look like friggin' tupperware bolted to the handlebars.

Ducati restyled the 999 after its first year in production to address the somewhat un liked goofy "wings". It's worth remembering, their inspiration came from the F1 cars of the day. In particular the Ferrari, when 'barge boards' were all the rage in coping with new aerodynamic challenges as the cars got smaller and the rules ever more technical to try slow them.

I'm not sure the 1098 could be lauded as a better bike than the 999 just yet. The 999 might not have been the sales success Ducati had hoped for, but those that bought them were not often if ever at all disappointed. The 999 has won many races and championships too, and at World level. The 1098 has yet to do either.

I hope it does. It's just a shame the 1098 has had to rely a little on more mainstream styling in order to capture a larger market. Seems the days of Italian flair are not as romantic as they once where when the 916 was the first motorcycle ever to stand in a world renowned art gallery and be hailed as 'art'.

He probably learned to ride like that from growing up on dirt bikes. Plus, he has the balls to try it on asphalt.

According to MCN, where the article (and video) are from, Xaus knocks it down into 1st into the hairpin, where I presume he catches the slide created from the momentary stalling of the rear wheel.

The rest of course, is easy Well it ain't his bike is it!

yeah the aint his bike part is a good point rocket. Even if I did have that level of skill I wouldnt be able to afford to replace the rear tire every week or two. I mean yeah I can do it on a dirt bike but doin it on the pavement is totally different I mean look at the lean angle he is at while he is doin it. Very impressive.
