OK my b-day is coming up this weekend and I was asked what to get. I had thought of getting parts for my 06 9SX and said hey lets get the buell race filter and the 07 inner airbox for a 12. I know I read here that it helps the engine rev easier. But now I am told that if I do this with the stock ECM the bike will run hot and lean and I can hurt the engine. Is this true? Would the same happen if I just changed the 07 inner airbox cover and left the stock filter in?

This question gets asked relatively frequently. Let's see if we can explain the problem clearly.

The engine works as a system.

In order to increase power, one needs to add both additional fuel and air.

If one adds additional air and no additional fuel, it will run lean as you suggest.

If one adds additional fuel, but does not provide for additional air flow at both intake and exhaust, it will run rich.

The best thing to do is to use the race air filter, an open air box, ( don't for get to remove the snorkle), the Buell Race ECM to add more fuel, and a less restrictive muffler such as Special Ops or the Drummer.

That way you will have improved your engine's breathing and provided more fuel in a balanced way.

The result is more power, and a soul satisfying sound.

Simply changing any one without the other is not such a great idea, although members, and both Special Ops and Drummer, sponsors of this board, have reported that the above mentioned mufflers will run ok with the stock air filter and ECM, as the stock ECM seems to be able to "learn" how much fuel to add.

if you want good results you should "do" all your mods. at the same time.(pipe ,ecm, k&n,& airbox) if you cain't afford all now , wait until you can, for the mods done all together really make a big differance !( if you change the recipe on the "cake" it probably won't turn out as anticipated !)

Another possibility, get what you can,when you can. Look for good deals, like on this board(classifieds) and when you got all the right stuff,put them on. As the others have said,it's a system and you will love the finished product.
You will also have to have your TPS reset for the new ECM. Sounds like a lot,but it's worth every penny in grin factorCharlie

But should it be OK to change the inner airbox cover and leave the stock filter? I would assume so since they have been putting it on the 07 9SX. Maybe I will just hold on to it until I get the other pieces and do it all at once.

I ran a high-flow filter with the rest of the bike stock('07) and had no problems. Changing the airbox, but leaving the stock filter would pose little to no risk. Like you said, that's what they're running on the 07's.

It should be fine with that. I just opened up my '06 air box with excellent results.

Thanks Icon thats good to know, but I wonder about longevity and also can the stock ECM compensate enough for the race filter? Since the race filter can let more air in I would think it wont because the exhaust is still restrictive right? I have often heard engines referred to as a pump. if you open up one end you need to open up the other to move more air.

I believe it was running a bit lean, but not to any extent worth worrying about. From what I've been told on here, it shouldn't be a problem...
But then again, I only ran it that way for about a week before I put on the race ECM, and Jardine pipe.

If you are unsure just run the '07 airbox, and wait with the filter until you can upgrade the ECM and exhaust.

What day is your birthday? Mine is on Sat.

Happy B-Day brother Taurus.

I am going to play it safe for now. I am not sure I want to change the exhaust yet. I kinda like the softer exhaust note. Have you done the catch can? I have been thinking of doing that sometime down the road as well.

I ended up going with a custom "catch can" design. About 3 feet of Gas line, a cheap crank case filter from Checker, a few T sections, and about 4 feet of clear hose from Home Depot. Ended up spending $25, compared to $130. Works just as well.

My first "legal" beer will be for you, Happy Birthday bro.
