Caused by a cager turning in front of me and me not paying attenion, with my hands off the bars stretching arms. I impacted car in an almost Tbone type angle but what saved the bike was it was more of a slanted T bone so it wasnt a complete Tbone. So the bike hit right side and kinda deflected to the left and bounced up and landed hard on the on the tail, which is the cause of most damage. I impacted at about 35mph and didnt have time to even hit the brakes. Never was able to get my hands back down to bars. Right at impact i remember "oh shit" and naturally kinda jumped up and did a complete superman over roof of car and landed on right back shoulder in a dive type roll. Barely a scratch due to gear but thought for sure my right foot, right leg and right shoulder was broke because i was hurting some thing fierce. Nothing broken some how but a deep bruise in my back right arm shoulder area.

All in all the damage is not that bad but the bike came down hard on the rear pillion and bent the shit out of the alluminum subframe tail and actually broke one of the mounting points. The following picture is not my bike but is exactly the same damage as mine but mine is the left upper mounting ear and is a 2004 12R..

How do I go about repairing this and is it even possible? I have no Insurance so thats not an option. Please tell me some good news. And does anyone know where to get a used straight subframe tail?

Thanks in advance..

Part it out and use that money as a down payment on another one.

If the cager turned in front of you, their insurance should take care of your bike. Also your medical expenses.

did the same to mine. snapped the rear subframe. Easy fix but a little expensive. Buy the subframe from Ebay. they are $500+ from the dealer. (I think) I can post pictures of my bike for reference if you like.

Glad you are ok. The bike can be fixed, a human body is a little tougher finding parts for.

Damnut,
Did yours break the same way? The part that is broken is on the tank/frame. please post some pics of the repairs. The subframe tail is a pricey item... Ebay is a good place to look for a used one?

Thanks in advance

well what happened to me was....... well it's a long story but here's the jist of it. riding down the highway in rush hour traffic. look at my gauges, oil light is on, think to myself... WTF??? look up... brake lights....... think to myself, this is going to hurt BIGTIME. panic. grab a handfull of brake. FACEPLANT at 55-65mph. smashed the whole frontend. to add insult to injury the tail section came around and whacked me as I was down. snapped the subframe at the main frame and tweaked it pretty good. pretty much wrecked the bike. TOTALLY SHOCKED that the insurance company didn't total the bike. Gave me a good size check. I didn't have frame pucks at the time so the adjuster paid me to have the frame powdercoated. Yea right. the frame pucks hide ALL the scratches on the frame. Did all the work myself. Used the extra money to buy goodies and to powdercoat what I wanted done. The bike is almost the way I want it to look now. Not quite done yet, Don't think I'll ever be done F'in with it. actually made out in the deal. If you forget about the 5 days in the hospital, shattered collar bone, 4 broken ribs, 2 broken toes and a shitload of roadrash.

One thing good came out of it though. I wear better gear now. I have always used a good helmet and that day it really saved my life.

I'll see if I can dig out some pictures. I'm not home at the moment, I'm working overseas. PM me and I can give you some pointers on what to do and how to fix it on the cheap.

A good aluminum welder can repair the subframe mounts.

Your frame looks fine, get a new rear subframe and ride it!

My bike has been Totalled TWICE! And I am putting her back together again to keep up the abuse. I want 100k on this bike before she retires!

Brian.....

Ding Ding Ding......Right answer Thats the best answer i was hoping for. Not the part it out scenario.

So this has been done before, yes? The mounting ear was clearly welded on before so just grind off old mounting ear and have a badass aluminum welder work his magic?

RIDING = Get a new/used subframe tail, front brake lever, both rider foot pegs, gear shifter and live with some scratched up plastics for a while but until then im riding.

I almost thought i was asking a trick question with the type of reply's i was getting but Brian read between the lines

I thank you...lol

racers have had those re-welded many times with good results.

It really isn't that big of a deal for a good welder.

Question for Diablobrian,
Does this repair require complete disassembly? I wrecked at Grattan Saturday (over-exuberant on cold tires) and am in the same boat, trying to get repaired in time the next track day. TIA - Kurt

It shouldn't. I'd drain the fuel, and they'll want to run some inert gas through it to purge the flammable fumes,
then disconnect the battery and they should be able to weld away.

The subframe mounts are not attached directly to the "tank". They are part of the structural castings.

Well, I found someone to do the welding, but they want to work on a disassembled frame. Oh well, with the manual, a few beers, and a long day it can't be that bad.
