I know this has been discussed, and I tried searching but can not find it. What's the real verdict on drilling little holes in the stock muffler next to the outlet? I can't afford an aftermarket pipe or even a muffler due to this, so I'm looking for something I can do to make it a bit louder, and maybe not lose any power. | ||

Maybe removing the glass packing inside the muffler would give the desired results. Of course this means cutting the front off and re-welding it back on. Drilling holes in it will reduce back pressure and affect power. | ||

I tried this on my 9R and although it gave it a little crackle...the power delivery was not noticably better. However I did notice the bike felt smoother at higher RPMs...presumable because the pressure in the can was able to escape a little easier. I ultimately went to a Drummer soon after that and never looked back. If I get another Buell...likely I will get the 12 and leave it alone. | ||

I have a 12 with the stock exhaust but per the "exhaust shootout" 3-7 hp for upwards of $600 just doesn't seem like I'd get much bang for the buck. All I really want is a better sound and I don't want to pay hundreds for sound. | ||

And that's my dilemma, I don't have any money at all to spend on it. So I'm looking for something I can do at home for free. I don't have a welder or any welding skills, so the only real option is to open up the outlet somehow. Thats why I was asking. I know someone on here had already done it and posted some pics of it, but in my search I could not find it. | ||

Even if you can't weld a welding shop can re-weld the end of your can back on for just a few bucks, It's even cheaper most times if you bring along a 6 or 12 pack of beer. There are a couple of good write ups on how to cut open the end and remove the return pipe inside of it and make the muffler single instead of triple pass. | ||

Will that mod require a remap of the ecm? Or can you slide by without remapping? You don't have a link to the thread do you? | ||

Both my previous bikes (although yamahas) had muffles that had drilled holes in the muffler caps to make them louder (by the previous owner) and although they were louder, they sounded horrible. I think you should save up some money and buy something that was engineered for maximum flow and desirable sound. | ||

TTim-I did what you are talking about. Performance wise, half a cent difference in noticable top end power. Sound wise was a little likeable while siting on the bike. But then one day while walking up to the bike with it running, it sounded like a Chevette with a bad manifold gasket leak. Quickly patched it up and searched for a used muffler to mod myself. Found a local buddy who welded and we set to work. After a little tweeking, It got to the sond that I liked, and a big noticable difference in top end running. Hope that helps JIM | ||

Thanks Jim, I think I'm just gonna leave it alone until I can fund a Drummer. Not sure I want to lose ANY low end performance even at the gain of top end and sound. And from the sounds of it, the sound won't be what I want. I really want to get it sounding more "Harley" like. I have a Hooker pipe on my Harley and I love the deep base of it, that's kind of what I'm looking for. |
