I hope this is not overly redundant. I have been reading all the different forums and web sites getting as much info as I can. I have used all the archives, etc. My fiancé is 5’5” and between 155 and 165 lbs with a 29” inseam. As a kid she rode dirt bikes and she presently rides an f650GS BMW, thumper on which I have installed a lowering kit, lower seat, barriser blocks and larger windscreen so that she would feel more comfortable. After the last service I did on the BMW (what a nightmare, time and removal of stuff just to check the valves, change the water, oil etc,) I told her I would not waste my time doing it again and that she would need to go to a BMW dealer, a costly proposition that. I talked her into road testing a Buell so she could get one of their nifty courier bags which I had gotten the prior week and she wanted, (can you see the hidden agenda here?) She rode the 9s which she found to be to tall. She could just touch her tiptoes to the ground. She made the comment that the difference between her bike and the Buell is like an old VW and Ferrari and also she liked the handling very much. She is quit enthusiastic about the Buell. After spending the last several days reading all the posts regarding the 9s and also the 12scg (which is the lowest seat height of the Buell line), it appears as if the 9s would be a great bike for her. Power/weight ratio excellent, abundant but manageable torque in her riding range, lower vibration levels at lower rpm, about $1500 less - for more gas and accessories, etc., I am also going to look for a new or 06 to get the lighter clutch pull newer transmission and few other refinements. She is a fast rider (but not aggressive) on back roads but not into top end speed. We do as little highway riding as possible, and have a toy hauler to take us to back roads. These are my questions; at her weight, how much suspension sag can we expect when the suspension is set-up for her weight? Will the scg seat work on the 9s and if so how much will the seat height be lowered? Is the scg the best seat for comfort and also lowering the seat height of the 9? I had read on a post that the springs from an scg can be swapped out with a 9s and if that is the case how much will that lower the 9? Also how much would that swap cost(ballpark) ? Can I just swap out the rear shock spring and raise the forks in the triple clamp on the 9? Also how difficult of a job would a spring swap be on a 9? I have a Uly and the shop manual so I can see what it takes to do a Uly. I was thinking about dealer cost for the springs and making that part of the purchase deal with labor a freebie. Anything else to add or recommend would be greatly appreciated.

Well I don't know about the time and costs on suspension swaps, but I do know about the scg seat. Its the lowest. But it is also the least comfortable. I weigh next to nothing and have no padding, so it might be better for someone that actually has a butt to sit on. For me, it's next to torture.

I had a low seat, and it wasn't great, But I didn't think it was too bad either.

I love my select though!

I would have to agree, the Scg seat is a bit uncumf. So after riding all day.... ouchie on tush. hehehe I'm wondering if the Corbin low profile seat on the American Sportbike site is more comfortable.

I ride a 9SL, and the seat is great if I "get off" the bike in the turns. I can go all day like that. If I have to actually sit on it, I might go 75 miles but after that, it's pure torture.

Obviously you are considering options. I would get the "9" and buy the parts for the "cg" suspension swap. That is the easiest to do(straight up swap). You need another lower triple clamp, and don't forget the kickstand.

I demo'd both the 9s and the Scg. Ended up getting the Scg as I'm only 5'3" and weigh 120#. The seat is definitely hard so took it to an upholstery guy who works mostly on cars and motorcycles. For $75 he removed the padding in the scg seat and replaced it with thicker, softer padding and what a difference (he had it done in about 2 hours too). I actually sit IN the seat now instead of being bumped around on the original seat.

Thought about purchasing the select but was concerned it would put me up too high.

Loved the 9s but it was too much work to bring it to my specs.

Good luck in your decision making.

(Just talked to my hubby and he said that he was told it would cost about $400 to do the suspension)

to make a regular s into an scg you need the shock, kickstand, forks (2) and lower triple clamp.

I did the swap on my firebolt, and if you have a way to suspend the bike (garage rafters)
or lift the bike off the ground (under muffler bike lift) it is really easy and can be
accomplished in 2-3 hours.

I'd do something like that and see if she still wants/needs the lower seat. The standard
and better yet the select seat are far more comfortable if the two of you really enjoy
riding.

Folks: thanks for taking the time to answer my long post. We went to a different Hardley/Buell dealer and she tested out an Scg. Well end of discussion we are now a two Buell household. She has a nice red Scg and we went for a 6 hour ride today. She loves it. Again thanks for the input. I am sure I will now be asking questions about mods for it, but for now we are just going to ride. Anybody want to purchse a very clean F650gs bmw?

How funny! I was down to an F650GS or the CityX and after riding both bikes it was no contest.

I agree about the Low seat getting uncomfortable. After I bought the bike I rode 140 miles home on the stock CityX seat - not too uncomfortable but I'm on my very tippy toes when I have to stop. So then I got the Low seat which has worked fine for commuting and twisties, but last weekend I did my first 100 mile day on it - okay that was pain my @ss hasn't known since my old Ducati Monster... Today I ordered the Street Fighter seat.

Enjoy the bikes!
