I just got a new bike Sunday : ) I rode for a few hours so far and I love it what a awesome bike. Anyways now the problems start, My bike started running real bad yesterday and I have no clue what it the
problem is. The bike is a 2003 Buell XB9s with 2700 miles and is very clean and well taken care of. The bike was stored for the winter and has only been ridden about 60 miles since it was taken out of storage on Sunday. What happens is when taking off from a dead stop there is a lot of hesitation and sometimes stalling. However it does not do it every time some takeoffs can be just fine. I have also noticed a hesitation while riding, usually keeping a even speed it runs fine but about 70% of the time when you try to accelerate it feels like it bogs down. It also smells like it is running a little on the rich side. I have ran some injector cleaner but this did not help.

Last night I replaced the spark plugs with NGK plugs and cleaned up the air filter put the bike back together and it fired right up. I left it sit and run for about 5 min it seemed to run at idle just fine so I hopped on and on take off it bogged down real hard so I pulled the clutch in and gave it a little gas to keep if from stalling. I shifted it back in to neutral and let it run for about a minute then just as I was thinking ok lets try this again she stalled. I fired it back up but this time she started a little on the rough side. Again I let it sit and run about a min and decided to back her in to the garage. As soon as I started pushing back she stalled.

I got it back in the garage pulled the plugs again they looked ok rechecked the gap to insure they are set at 35 thousandths both checked out ok so I put the plugs back in and fired it back up. She fired right up again I let it idle for about 3 min before I hopped on this time I pulled the bike in so I had to back her out I start pushing backwards and got about 1 foot before she stalled. I fired her backup idled for about 30 sec and started pushing back I got about another foot and stalled. So I give my buddy a puzzled look he just shrugs so I fire it
up again let it idle for about 2 min it sounds fine still smells a little rich and push it back again got another foot and stalled. So now I decide lets see what forward does so I walk her around fire her up let it idle for a min and push forward ... she bogs down a little but does not stall so I put it in first and take off it bogs down and stalls. I Went to fire it back up and it does not fire. After waiting
20 min or so it fores right back up again but still the same problems.

Any suggestions?

May sound dumb, but how old is the gas?

I know very little about it, but sounds like it may be flooding? Air/fuel mix is alright at idle, but then when you give it extra throttle it dies.... maybe the automatic choke is hung up?

Just guessing. I really have no idea.

The gas is from Nov when the guy I bought it from put it away for the winter. I drover it Sun, Mon, and a little on Tues and added about 1.5 to 2 gallons of 91 octane and some injector cleaner.

I do plan on emptying the gas out tonight after work to see if it helps. I am just looking for some ideas I am kinda stumped and I really don't want to take the bike to a repair shop unless I have to.

Is there anything I can do to check the automatic choke that Swordsman suggested I don't have the service manual yet it should be here next week. I did see a place I could download a copy from if I really need it before then.

Let me ask you this. You let it warm up for a bit, then get on, kick it into gear and then she stalls out? Are you sure your kickstand is all the way up? If it get's blocked or isn't all the way up, it'll stall out the bike.

Yeah I check the kick stand unless the switch is bad. The problem got worse after changing the plugs. Before I changed the plugs I was riding it. It would stall or bog down about one of three take offs from a dead stop or bog down when accelerating at speed on the road. After changing the plugs I can't even get it to run long enough to get to the end of my drive way.

to be 100% honest, the only reason I thought of it was because I was in a hurry to get moving this past weekend and forgot to kick my stand up. Sure enough, she bogged down to nothing and the check engine light came on...then DUH, I figured it out.

When you/anyone change the spark plugs on the XBs, be very careful to properly fit the spark plug terminal on the plug tip. Make sure you feel it snap into position. Also verify that the coil end of the cables are fully seated.

Is it completely stock or did the previous owner do any mods? Ask him if it ran this way for him.

At what RPM does your engine idle?

The engine idles around 975-1050 rpm.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far as soon as I get off work here I am going to try a few things to see if I can get it fixed

1)check your wiring underneath your seat. Sometimes it will rub a little on the battery cables. 2) How about the fuel pump. I know when they go bad and you hit the brakes hard it will make the pump act up, kind of sloshing around (fuel) my .02

I would start easy and go from there check your battery then battery connections especially grounds, then kickstand switch, if that doesn't work maybe you need a tps reset if it applies someone before you may have changed something and not done it
sorry I cant be more helpful

Sorry to be a thread pirate, but I have a question about the kickstand switch...

I once forgot to put my kickstand up and was able to ride the bike all the way to the end of the street no problem. I only discovered it when I tried to make a left turn at the end of the block and hit the kickstand. Do 05 XB12Scg's not have the safety switch?

I got a scg and it doesn't have a kickstand switch as well. I think it's normal for the scg's.

I think 04 and new XB's do not have a kickstand switch.

Also I ended up getting my bike running.... I think it was raining pretty hard so I did not get a chance to test it but I did drive it around the garage. It seems that when the battery was put in it was pinching some wires and after fixing that she seems to run like a champ.

Thanks to everyone @ Badweb for all the wonderful advice
