Ok I posted this in the KV but not sure if anyone's taken a look in there today. Here's my dilemma...

I installed a Hyper-Lite Dual Function running/brake LED kit per the instructions but they're not working. The instructions were pretty simple-stupid (or so I thought) and did not mention having to install any sort of load balancer. Should I have done that? Any ideas on what I should do next? Could it have been a faulty kit? This is going on an 05 XB9SX w/a stock tail light assembly.

Take a step back up and establish whether the problem lies with the lights or your wiring - power them straight off the battery to see if they work...

You shouldn't need a load balancer. Just fault find it as normal.

It might help if you can tell us what the wires go to in the kit. Specifically, is there a ground wire provided for in the hookup?

If there is a ground wire provided, make sure you pick a secure ground point, either the negative battery terminal or the place where other ground wires are attached on the bike's frame.

Thanks for the tips.

The instructions call for the wires to be wired as follows:

Red - Brake Light
Gray - Running Light
Black - Electrical system ground

The two LED modules connect to the flasher module via Telco connectors. I have verified that they are connected properly.

I wired the Red Gray and Black wires right behind the connectors going into the bulb.

I'll try and move the ground to a more secure point and see if that helps.

Is yours the S16 kit? If so, I found the wiring diagram. It seems pretty straightforward except they blame most problems on wiring connections and not the parts.

But there's a couple caveats in the scooter wiring instructions online. It states not to test the flasher and not to touch the blue and brown wires together after connecting the gray and black wires. That's a lot of "nots". Do your instructions say the same and, if so, are you OK there?

If yours is indeed tapped into the correct wires with a secure ground point and it still doesn't work, I would suspect those clamp-on connectors. That's a low-tech solution for a high-tech product, IMHO. If it were mine, I would solder the wires (if the unit works, that is).

Thanks for the tips. It looks like it was a bad ground that was the culprit. I changed to Posi-loc connectors just to be on the safe side. I may decide to solder the wires now that I know the units work.

I have to say they are very bright and work really well now that I have good connections.

Overall I have to say I'm happy with how they work now that they're wired properly. During my commute to and from work today people seemed to give me more space.

Oh yeah, I mounted them inside the rear reflectors (thanks to Midknyte for that idea and for the help). I ran the wires through the stock holes for the turn signal wires.

I hear you about being subtle but with as many bad drivers as there are here in Austin I need all the help I can get. It seems like every cager has a phone glued to their ear.
