I get the "increased airflow" marketing brief, but what does the '07 airbox change really buy you? HP and torque figures are unchanged from '06 to '07. Why would the '07 XB be better than the '06, beyond the theoretical?

It very well could be the power curve, and not the peak numbers that make the difference.

Throttle response and off idle driveability.

I have an 06 Uly and installed a spec ops pipe and race ECM with a K&N filter at 1000 miles. Ported the stock airbox for a slight improvement in throttle response and a little more intake noise. Went to the 07 airbox for still more throttle response and considerably more intake noise. Finally went to American Sport Bike open airbox kit and relocated the pcv breathers out of the air box for another big increase in throttle response and a huge increase in intake noise.

If I had it to do all over again, I would go straight to the open air and pcv relocation kit, as the difference is quite remarkable and I love the V-twin throttle body moan.

Never thought about my bike as a moaner.

I used to have a "notch" at 4,000 rpm where the bike would take off. The notch is removed and the bike seems to breathe better from idle to 4,000 rpm.

I think one other benefit would be the placement of the holes away from the right side. The airbox sucks in air from all round the airbox cover. It's normally directly sucking in hot air from the right side coming off the headers. Now, it's pulling from the front opening as well as mainly from the left side. Sure it can still get some heat from the right as well as the airbox base plate, but when it's 105 degrees out this summer, I'll take all the intake heat reduction I can get.

Thanks for the responses. I am considering replacing my '06 Lightning Long with a Firebolt. The dealer has both an '06 and an '07 in stock. I did demo the '07 and it felt noticeably smoother and peppier, even though it is brand new and not broken in (my Lightning has 8k on it). I thought it might be the effect of the Firebolt fairing making slicing through the air easier, but maybe it IS the airbox re-design?
