I was hoping to gather a collection of experiences people have had with using RIT dye to change the color of their plastics...I just read about the process in the archives, and was wondering how many have tried it?

What were your starting colors, and what color did you try for?

What were the results?

Any lessons learned to share?

Thanks,
-Andy

This was my test. As an update, I never waxed or protected the plastics so the black has faded just slightly. The black under the tank protector is fine. I suppose I could just redye it but it actually looks better slightly faded.

Another question. I am thinking of dying the gray part of the chin spoiler black. It looks like crap.

Would I need to remove it from the other black pieces or just dunk the entire assembly. I'd rather not have to re-rivet the chin.

Dont re-rivet, use a rivet eliminator. I used Aircraft "Clipnuts" They slide over the holes in the center piece (Inside of them is a small captive nut) and then you just use a 1/4 28NFT bolt to bolt it on. My bike is Black and Amber so I used cadmium plated bolts to match the amber. It turned out great! now I can just take off the one side to do oil changes and it looks better than the factory rivets.

For a really wild look try twisting your plastics in knots, hold the knots with rubber bands, then dip the parts in multiple color dyes........walllahhh, Hippie Buell!

A tie dye Buell?

Oh wow man! That would be so groovey!

I'm not so sure I would be able to get the knots out of the plastic though

Interesting about the translucent colors. I have dyed a lot of plastic with RIT dye and some plastic DOES NOT accept the dye. I have had RC airplane canopies in RIT dye for hours only to pull it out and it's perfectly clear. I does depend on the type of plastic, so I am curious about the translucent parts???? Not sure if they will accept the dye or not. My guess is it would work.

And you can get RIT dye at most grocery stores. There are usually a better choice of colors at craft stores however. (Did I just say that out loud??)

And use the liquid stuff not the powder.

I used the powder dye to do one center section and it came out pretty good, started to chalk up alittle bit months later and also started to fade after a bunch of washes. I got another center and dyed it with the liquid dye and it looks a lot better. I will have to see how it holds up.

Has anyone has found a way to keep the original color in an area of a dyed plastic? Do you think sticking a sticker over part of it would protect the original color? Or would the hot water dissolve the glue holding the sticker on?

Any other suggestions?

Don't waste your time dying the middle piece of the chin fairing. It ain't worth the effort. Just get a can of BBQ black and paint it. That way you can just paint it each time it starts to look bad. Besides, I'm not sue that middle part is surlyn.

Masking tape.
Or
Drill out the rivets and replace them with small lock nuts and bolts.
That's what I did.

That middle gray section of the chin spoiler cleans up real nice with "Goo Gone", if you don't want to paint it or you like the gray color. Almost 12,000 miles on mine and it still cleans up pretty well.

"Don't waste your time dying the middle piece of the chin fairing."

I "wasted my time" and haven't bothered with it since!
The dyeing was easy to do, and came out really well.
It looks great and doesn't show chips as the dye penetrates into the plastic.
Do it once, then forget about it !!

How well have the dyed plastics held up to the sun?

Dapope- In the picture you posted in an earlier thread each different colored plastic looks like it had streaks of darker and lighter color. Is this the case, or was that just a camera effect?

Nah, It's just the picture(sort of) I used a cut up front fly screen so none of those pieces are flat. The black, red, and orange looked great. The greens, and blues (except for the very dark blue) all looked a little goofy to my eye with a slighly inconsistent color. (even though I almost went with the green because it was so weird) So to answer your question, yes and no.

And as I said above. My black UNPROTECTED parts did fade. I think some wax would protect it from the sun.

If you are going to do it black, I would soak it until the water cools completely. The longer you soak (at higher temps) the better the color.

Has anyone tried dyeing black plastics? I know that any color would be very dark, looking more for an "effect" on the original color, sorta like a tinted clearcoat.

This's a cut n Paste from Me NWF Online Home:

Ok.. Anyone that Owns a late model Buell KNOWS that the Grey Chin Fairing/Spoiler Thing is GAY and ORRIBLE.

Mine was SHIT from day ONE with some Sorta Freakin Stain on, that would Nay Budge..

^ I reckon it was Brake Fluid... but Soon After, thje whole thing Started Lookin POXY!

I Entertained the Idea of Paintin it... but I'd have ta either Drill OUT the Bloody rivets, or mask it Up... either way... It'd Look shit After a Few Hundred Pebbles were Flicked on it vis the front Tyre

There was this Thread at BadWeb, ALL Bout said.. n Other Colour Changes via the Cloth dye 'RIT'.

I've used it before to Change the Colour of me Goat.. but I Digress:

Anyway, i had this Idea that Purple AND Black Would Look Sweet.... Well... Let's SEE shall we?

Step ONE:
Buy a carton of Beer.. While at Woolies, Buy said Bottles of RIT.

Step TWO:
does it Fit in girlfriends Laundry Trough (hey.. this is gonna be potentially messy... aint doin that to me own laundry)

Step THREE:
Fill Trough, Add Contents

Step FOUR:
Drink Beer n Read Shit on the Intardwebby

At a SIX Pack, She's Lookin OK......(1.5 hours)

A Dozen Beers n Gettin There..(3 hours)

16 Beers (4.5 hours)

18 Beers n 5.5 hours... Took her Out n Dried it..

BLOODY MARVELOUS!!!

OK.. i've Chucked iot back in till I fall over in about 45 minutes.. BUT.. to Address the Insanity of USING Both BLACK and PURPLE together,.. ya see... I wanted to Try n BLEND it with the FRAME COLOUR... Dark Grey...ish...

Anyway... I reckon it Looks Shit-HOT!~

I'll get a Photo when I Whack it on Tomorra.

Chjeers

Burrrrrrrp.
