if i put the jardine pipe on my '06 cityx do i need to install the race ecm. the dealer says i have too but unfortunately i don't trust my dealer.has anyone just changed the pipe and is the bike running as good as stock. thanks in advance

Race ECM and Hi Flo air filter (K&N or Buell race filter) are needed to get the most out of the bike and for it to run properly.

What Beachbuell left out is if you run just the stock ecm with the stock map you'll most likely(edit: will) run into a lean condition where you'll foul your plugs quickly.

Or install the race ecm and filter n get loud annoying pops n crackles on decel.
Ride it without,If it feels fine then keep it that way.
Alot of people do it I'm pretty sure there not all fouling plugs with every ride.

Mine runs fine, no fouled plugs but does crackle a lot on deceleration as mentioned.
I would put a race ecm on though if I could get one.

I put a Drummer on my bike and ran the stock ECM for about 1 month with the stock air filter until I could get the Race ECM put in. Doing this WILL create a more lean condition than stock...it will make it more lean still if you run a more open filter since more air is going through the system with the same ECM controlling the fuel.

I replaced the plugs right before getting the Race ECM installed to see the difference. With the stock ECM the plugs were hardly dark at all...practically white all over...this was with 9000 miles on them...clearly running a bit lean.

When I replaced the plugs about 8000 miles later after everything was switched, the plugs were a light tan color which was just about right. The fan was on less but that could have been due to simply having more miles on the bike. Since then the plugs have been replaced about every 8000 miles and they have been of a similar light tan color each time and the bike runs very well.

BTW: I don't believe a lean condition will cause plugs to foul...usually it is a rich condition. That is why it is not advised to rev up these motors when cold since the ECM is already dumping more fuel than normal to keep the motor running at idle to warm up. Revving up the motor dumps even more fuel making the problem worse.

I have a jardine on my XB12S, with stock filter and stock ECM. I love it, sometimes I wish it was louder, sometimes I wish it was quieter.
I still have the original plugs, it does pop on deceleration, and I don't mind a bit.

Just because the bike "seems to be fine", doesn't mean all is well in side of it. Think about this........... Your Buell or any motorcycle for that matter is set to run lean from the factory. The factory has to meet very strict EPA noise and emission control. Now with that being said..... Removing your stock exhaust and installing a more free flowing or open exhaust will enhance this lean condition even more. You must make up for this condition by remapping your fuel intake (ECM) and by removing your stock air filter and installing a more free flowing or open air intake (air filter element). The Buell Factory Race Kit comes complete with the Race Exhaust, Race ECM and Hi Flo Filter. Do you think this is by mistake? I think not. Hey, you can do what you wish with your own motorcycle (like ride it into a wall, if you choose). Just beware of what you may be doing to it in the long run.

Don't forget that you will need a TPS reset if you change the ECM.

If you were to install a high flow filter, but leave the ecm and exhaust stock, will it make a difference?

Putting in a high flow filter with the stock ECM and Exhaust is far less dangerous then opening up just the exhaust.

If the system actually pulls in more air as a result of putting in just a higher flowing air filter, you will be making the bike somewhat leaner but this is definitely safer.

I completely agree with Beachbuell...my experience with rejecting carbs for both bikes and cars shows that proper air/fuel mix is very important not only for performance but for engine longevity...

thanks for all answers...i don't intend to just throw parts on and hope for the best, problem being that my dealer sucks...when i asked the service department these questions they referred me to a parts guy who rides a buell because none of the techs were sure......ah the quality customer service of dealership forced to carry a bike they hate. in my experience with all of my bikes any exhaust change required jetting and air filter mods...but i was unsure on fuel injection. also i was unsure as to whether or not the stock ecm could be remapped.

I installed the race ecm and filter as well as a Jardine can. I had the dealer reset the TPS. The pipe sounds awesome and I get compliments all the time. Be aware though that the Jardine may not last too long. I've had two buddies on a 12S and 12R who both had the end caps blow completely off most likely due to vibration fatigue of the aluminum around the rivets. By the way, I just changed my plugs and they had a slight blackening around the edge which looked to be a slightly rich condition.
