So, even though I knew about the problem with Zero Gravity screens burning holes in peoples instrument panel, I bought one anyways. My thinking was that I park in covered parking 95% of the time, between work, home, bike nights, etc., and during those quick visits into a store during daylight hours I would use my gloves to cover the gauges. That quickly became a routine, so I can pretty much say for sure that my instrument panel has never been directly exposed to sunlight through the Zero Gravity screen other than while riding.

Looong story short, while washing my bike this weekend I noticed an almost dime size area just above the tachometer glass that has been heated to the point of melting! I really wish I could post a pic of this to show you guys what I mean. ARRRGH!!! I'm pissed. And of course, Zero Gravity will not do crap about it...

Having had some experience with magnifying glasses, I would guess that it only took a matter of seconds to cause the damage once the sun and the bike were in the right alignment.

Sucks dude.

I've got the ZG scars on my dash, too. Whenever I park, I just throw my gloves up over the top of the dash to keep it from getting worse.

I just ordered a memphis shades cockpit blue fade windscreen.
I'm HOPING its patterned after the stock screen and not the dbl bbl.
I dunno why people still order them eventually it WILL burn you.( pun KINDA intended )

No problems yet with my ZG screen, however mine isn't one of the infamous double bubble screens, it's a "+3" one.

I think you may be a little unfair to Zero Gravity on this issue, as it isn't only their screens that can do this. Any of the 'double bubble' type screens are capable of causing this same damage, whether from ZG, Ermax, MRA, Powerbronze etc.
Ermax actually provide a 'dash protector' with their DB screens now as a matter of course.

Placing gloves or a cloth over the dash when you park in bright sunlight is a very good suggestion with any DB screen, or why not make up a dash protector to fit permanently inside the screen?.

I learned it the hard way on my Busa.

I have a Puig DB on it now, but the damage is done, no more worrying about it.

After all the news about all the problems associated with aftermarket screens, I've just avoided direct sun. I'll stuff my jacket under the screen or park in the shade. If I can't do either, I'll point the bike's tail toward the sun.

Easy thing to prevent IF you know it can happen.

Glad to amuse you Glitch.

Read the stuff in between those few lines you posted and its not so funny. I posted this to hopefully help another rider who has also taken precautions, like gloves over the cluster, etc., to avoid this problem.

Thanks for your helpful contribution!

Is it possible this could occur on a nice sunny day while you are riding? Or is this only a concern of prolonged stationary exposure?

Naustin,
The diff. is I cover my bike when parked outside, therefore if it is a stationary exposure problem I wouldn't worry about it and probably buy one anyhow. If the damage can occur on a bright day while riding, I would not want to take the chance.

Anybody have any insight on this issue?

I was trying to say that I think it can happen while moving just as easy as if it was parked.

Sun + Lens = intense heat

I'm easily amused ;)

No shit man, you were aware of a problem, and then get pissed because you weren't an exception?

What did you expect?

I posted this to hopefully help another rider who has also taken precautions, like gloves over the cluster, etc., to avoid this problem. Good on ya!

The problem isn't the sun going THROUGH the zero gravity double Bubble screen.

The problem is the sun shining from BEHIND the double bubble screen, where it behaves as a reflective parabola.

Face the bike the right way when parked and it won't do it. It won't do it while riding, the rider is in the way.

Ah - that makes sense! The sheild doesn't really have the properties of a lens since it is of uniform thickness. I should have thought about that a little more... Great input Al.
