Well, it's been sometime now that the XB's have the new trans. So, I was wondering. Have there been any reports on problems with these new ones or have they been rock solid?

This is mearly a curiosity question.

I have an 06 XB12R, just turned 5800 mi.. Shifts are great, crisp but not clunky. We'll see as the miles accumulate: ).

Got a friend who had an 06 XB12R. Gearbox locked solid in second gear. When I say 'locked solid', I mean he couldn't change gear either way, although could still freewheel, de-clutched. I'm pretty sure that's the only one in the UK with that problem. The dealer couldn't actually find the problem. They ended up replacing the whole gearbox!

They're one of the best trannies to come out of the PDC and Cap. Dr.

Mine has been fine for over 10,000 miles and a track day. Shifts fine, including clutchless upshifts.

Chadhargis,
Do you worry about trans damage with the clutchless upshifts? I rarely ever used the clutch on my VFR but that is another animal altogether. I have tried it a couple of times on my 12R(06), the shifts felt good but I'm afraid of doing some serious damage. I have seen posts warning of this behaviour, but have not heard from anyone who actually does it on a regular basis.

Anyone else out there speed-shifting?

I only do it on the track at very high RPM. I quickly cut a bit of throttle as I preload the shifter and it pops right in.

Everything I've read says that clutchless upshifts do not harm the transmission as you are in essence doing the same thing as when you use the clutch. You're unloading the tranny (by briefly rolling slightly off the trottle), shifting, then getting back on the power. Nothing is happening any differently than when you use the clutch.

Just don't do it under power and don't do it when downshifting.

When I hear stuff like that it makes me want to scream, "WATERHEAD". A transmission is a mechanical device. It's not magic. I, not being a mechanic, would replace it. A mechanic, supposedly knowledgeable and trained, should be able to diagnose the problem. This is why they get paid. More then likely, it was just far easier and cheaper to go ahead and have Buell pay for a replacement.
