I was riding out on this newly paved high speed road with some friends. Just coming out of this one turn I see this dog in the distance so I decided not to accelerate or do anything stupid and the rider up front did the same. All of a sudden the little terrier bolted straight at him. I thought for second "hit the @#$* dog" The guy in front of me on the right swerved over to me and low sided. My inital decision was not to hit him and to go around but since he and his bike were spread across the entire road all I could do is go off road. So I tried to slow down as best as I could till I hit the gravel/sand and I could only ride it for a few seconds when I had to eject after the rear slid out from under me. I landed straight directly onto my left shoulder, didn't slide or anything. Helmet and gear is all good and not a scratch really. I don't know how but my right thigh is sore. I think I did a split in the air and over extended it outward. So my friend had to make a trip to the hospital with a scraped leg and arm but he's ok. I'm just sore all over. Tomorrow i'll be in more pain I'm sure.

Frame pucks did what they were supposed to do plastics are scratched up but over all shifter and pegs are ok.

Glad to hear you are okay too man geez what is with all of us going down lately. I am sure you will be alot more sore tomm. I am friggin dying today, but i did at least three rearward flips. I hope you can get back to riding before me. I will be out for awhile. My legs are what hurts the most to. I think we naturally overstress the muscle when we know we are about to go down to protect out legs. That and trying to keep the bike up while squeezing as hard as possible with your legs may not have helped either.

I layed around in bed for a few hours in pain took a shower went to the mall and my leg is ok. What hurts me the most is my shoulder. I landed dead center on it. I'm not in all that much pain, I feel like I just got beat down by a few thugs. A few days and I'll be back to normal.

That sucks for you dongalonga, hope you have a speedy recovery.

Did you knock on the door of the dog owner?

Glad to here you faired pretty well. Glad the frame pucks saved the bike.

Lots of Advil and sleep it off.

Yeah I think I'd be asking the dog owner about what they intend to do to fix your bikes. Either that or I'd ride by later with the shotty for the little rat with good PR. Hate those little rat dogs. I wouldn't have swerved one inch and figure if he got under the tires he got under the tires and do my best to ride through it. Of course I don't want to hurt anyone or anything unnecessarily, but I'm not dumping my bike for anybody's freakin mutt. Reminds me of a little yipper that used to chase me on my mountain bike every morning when I got exercise before work. I didn't run him down, but I definitely solved the problem with prejudice after putting up with it every morning for weeks on end. One day the mutt actually bit my shoe unprovoked. He was done biting bicyclists the very next morning.

Sorry to hear of the fall but at least no one got hurt. When I took the MSF class they mentioned dogs. I guess you are to change your speed as they approach. They can't "calculate" the speed change in their angle of approach and they won't hit you, or visa versa. I'm glad to say that so far I haven't had to test it.

MSF class is probably what saved my life. I am a much better rider for having taken it two years ago.

I agree the class is well worth the money.

I didn't mean to say you were an inexperienced rider. Some times you just can't avoid things. Glad to hear you're alright. The bike can be fixed so chalk it up to experience.

Glad that you are OK and that the bike isn’t too bad either.

A few years ago I was on a group ride. I was leading a group of moderate paced riders behind a group of fast riders. The fast guys had slowed down to maybe 45 or so on a long straight section for us to catch up, and I could see them in the distance.

A dog ran out into the road. Rider “A” swerved left and braked. Rider “B” rear ended rider “A.” Rider “B” went sliding on the ground.

I think there are 2 lessons from these stories.

1.) Never risk crashing to avoid hitting an animal unless the animal is big enough to cause you greater harm if you hit it.
2.) Don’t follow another rider so closely that his crashing would put you both in jeopardy.

Tx05xb12s I am with you on this. If you or I had road past b/4 this accident and run over that dog we wouldn't be reading of 2 downed motorcyclists.

I have tested it, and it does work where the circumstances are such that you can employ it. You slow down and the dog will pick a trajectory to intercept you at your slowed speed. As you approach the intercept point you roll on the gas. You will be gone b/4 the dog can reach you.

I like to have fun and just gas it enough to keep the dog behind me. I laugh as they wear themselves out trying to catch me.

Obviously if the dog is standing in the road ahead of you or darts out suddenly from behind cover it won't work. I have found that if I aim for the dogs face the will get out of the way. If I try to swerve away the dog will just go after me.

M_Singer is right on here. Dogs use S.I.P.D.E., adjusting your speed throws off there course to intercept.

Glad to hear you guys are OK, sometimes it is unavoidable, or it sure feels that way. Happens soooooo fast.

I guess in all fairness I have to say that the few times I've encountered animals on my bike I have slowed down and then sped up as I got alongside them too (works for deer). However that was because I felt safe due to being on good roads in no traffic. If I feel like there's a danger I'll wreck trying to miss the animal due to conditions or traffic, I'm taking it out. If I wreck because I hit it, I'd have probably wrecked anyway trying to miss them so I'm not out anything and I also eliminated a road hazard for the next guy. People need to keep their pets off the road if they expect to keep them. I do give large animals the right of way however. (-:

I say all this and I'm an animal lover! I just love my bike and my life more. In a car I feel a little safer about swerving or getting on the binders if there's no traffic. I don't really relish hurting animals, but then again there is a certain amount of self-richeousness involved in taking them out if need be. Like that stupid dog in Colorado that bit me that morning on my bicycle. I fixed his wagon for him and cackled like a crazy man all the way home.

Someone on the Bad Web had an suv hit a deer or moose in front of him and watched as the animal flew over, narrowly missing him.

I remember that story about 6 months back or so. Guy got pretty lucky. Deer are a problem around her in the wintertime. Gotta watch out on the country roads. Dumb animals will stand on the side of the road and watch you approach and then bolt out in front of you right when you're parallel to them. Night riding is downright dangerous in December through February out here.

A friend of mine had a car crash in front of his house avoiding his dog (dog never touched). When he mentioned it, I asked "I never thought about it, are you at fault, or is he?". He said "I never thought about it either, but apparently it's me". Didn't go any further, none of my business, but it makes me think he checked it out and found out that he does have some liability.

(Of course he is an absolute stand up guy as well, so he may have been speaking from personal integrity and not Ohio judicial code).

Reepicheap - That's interesting stuff. But what about the guy who worked for the State and backed into his wifes car with the DOT truck he took home, and then sued the State since it was their vehicle that wrecked his wifes car? The world is an interesting place. . .

In 2004, I rolled my car while trying to avoid a badger.

And before that I broke my scaphoid when I hit a 'little' dog on my mountain bike.

They may look small but some of these animals are as solid as rock.
