In regards to the front belt pulley, are there two different sizes (gear teeth). I assume there may be for the 12 and 9. My 03 belt is at almost 15,000 miles and figured I would just change to the newer style.

And actually I will add just a comment. The 04 style belt guards look almost completely useless. The 03 style enclosed the belt from all sides including front/back. The 04 style only covers the sides - Strange.

The two different sizes are from different years. They changed the pulleys in 04. Both the 9 and 12 have the same pulleys.

The 2003 9 had different pulley sizes than the 12 and a different belt.
You need to change the belt, pulleys and idler wheel.
American Sportbike do a conversion kit.
You will also need new belt guards.
The reason the belt was enclosed is they are really prone to breaking.
If you look at your service schedule you should replace the belt and pulleys at 15,000 miles anyway.

Thanks for the posts. I am switching over because a new belt and idler wheel are $250 deep anyway (as Norrie said they are to be changed at 15K on the 03's). Why not pay $450 and get double the miles. Anyways the dealer was looking at the 04 book I thought, and it listed two different sizes thats where my confusion was. Maybe he was in the wrong year. And I'm going to skip the guards, like I said the 04 style look useless. Thanks.

I have an 03 9S and installed the 03 style upgraded belt for $100. A lot cheaper in the long run.

For 03's maintenence says @ 15K change belt AND Pulley. That's $250. My belt so far was trouble free, I'm just looking a little extra piece of mind thats all, so I'm going to change up. I'd hate for the old style to break and me kicking myself in the arse. Of course I'll really be pissing and moaning if the new style breaks.
